The Forest-Blade • ummiEmaniielConntyLive.com • Swainsboro, Georgia • February 24, 2021 7 A Lanier-Moore VFW Post 5745 Turns 75 On Feb. 15, 1946, 56 individuals from Eman uel County, who had not many years before, volunteered again to bring a Local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post to Swainsboro. Named in honor of the first two in dividuals from Emanuel County killed in World War II, Julian D. Lanier and John J. Moore, the Lanier-Moore VFW Post 5745 has been represent ing veterans and their families for the last 75 years. On Feb. 15, 2021, at a small ceremony at the Emanuel County Veter ans Center on Kite Hwy., the post was issued sev eral mementos of their 75 years of service to their veterans and community. Senator Billy Hickman, Georgia State Senator of the 4 th District, presented State Senate Resolution #74 commending the post for their long ser vice to the community. Georgia VFW State Jr. Vice Commander Jim Willis presented a 75 th Diamond Jubilee award from Veterans of Foreign Wars National Head quarters. While speak ing, he also mentioned how uncommon it is for a post to have such a long history in a community. The final event for the evening was May or Charles Schwabe presenting a new lease for the land where the Emanuel County Veter ans Center Building sits to the Emanuel County Veterans Association. This new lease will main tain the property for the Veterans for the next 100 years. The Emanuel Coun ty Veterans Association membership includes all veterans and their immediate family mem bers and maintains the building where both the American Legion Swainsboro Post 103 and Lanier-Moore VFW Post 5745 hold their monthly meeting and events for veterans. The building was constructed in 1946, and for the past seven months, has undergone renovations to include floors sanding and re finish (original flooring), painting, new cabinets in the kitchen, and it is still ongoing. The VFW Post 5745 would like to thank those from the community that donate, especially the Mill Creek Foundation and Walmart for grants to make this all possible. The veterans of this great county plan to continue being a sup porter of the community for many years to come. SCENES FROM EVENT Southeastern Technical College Names Semi-Finalists for GOAL Program Four Southeastern Technical College (STC) students have been se lected as the College's semi-finalists for the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL). Chosen as semi-finalists are: Emily Ely, Dental Hy giene Degree Program Kimbrell Higginboth am, Dental Hygiene De gree Program Erica Paige Murphy, Associate of Science in Nursing Program Claudia Martinez Wil son, Healthcare Manage ment Degree Program & Medical Assisting Diplo ma Program GOAL, a statewide program of the Techni cal College System of Georgia (TCSG), honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state's technical col lege students. GOAL winners are selected at each of the state's 22 technical colleges. "The purpose of the GOAL program is to spotlight the outstand ing achievement by students in Georgia's technical colleges and to emphasize the impor tance of technical edu cation in today's global workforce," said Natalie Osborne, STC's GOAL Coordinator. Students were nomi nated by their instruc tors. A screening com mittee of STC employees selected the four semi-fi nalists after conducting interviews with all nom inees. A panel of business, civic, and industry lead ers from the communi ty will evaluate these four students in the next round of interviews and select one to be the Southeastern Technical College 2021 GOAL Win ner. The GOAL winner will compete in regional judging in April. In May, all college winners will be recognized and the nine regional finalists, three from each region, will be announced and will compete at the state level. One student will then be named as the statewide GOAL winner. That student becomes an ambassador for Geor gia's entire technical col lege system and receives a grand prize of a brand new car provided by KIA Motors, the state wide corporate sponsor of Georgia's GOAL pro gram. Southeastern Tech names 2021 Staff Member of the Year Tire staff member of tire year award is a prestigious award creat ed to recognize a staff member who lias exemplified excellence in their day-to-day job, as well as contrib uted in other ways to make South eastern Technical College a success during the past year. The award is given to an employee of the College who is neither a faculty member nor a member of the Executive Council. Benefits include a cash award from the STC Foundation, an engraved plaque, and a designated parking space to use throughout 2021. Congratulations to Southeastern Technical College's 2021 Staff Mem ber of tlie Year, Valerie Ennis, Ad missions Assistant! Ennis said, "Admissions is fire face of STC. It is an applicant's first impression of the College; there fore, attitude, warmth, and cus tomer service are crucial to making a connection with applicants and promoting a positive image for STC. I feel that I embody these at tributes and contribute to the pos itive, caring, student-oriented first impression that STC is known for. I could not be included in a more deserving finalist group and I am honored to be associated with fire current nominees, former nomi nees, and previous winners. These are individuals that model the pos itive, caring, supportive, and fami ly-orientated work environment of which I am proud to be a member."
