VOLUME 162, NO. 9 Swainsboro, Georgia • March 3,2021 ONE DOLLAR Lady Dawgs advance to Elite 8 by RON WEATHER FORD The ECI girls basket ball team advanced to the elite 8 round of the state playoffs last week winning their first and second round games. They defeated Charl ton Co. on Tuesday 71-57 and ended the week tak ing down Pelham 60-45 on Friday. Senior scoring lead er Prencis Harden had the hot hand in the two games scoring a total of 73 points. The Bulldogs jumped out to a comfortable 20- 13 lead in the first quar ter. But Charlton closed the gap in the second pe riod outscoring ECI 14-9 with the Lady Dawgs taking just a 2 point lead at the half, 29-27. The Bulldogs poured in 26 points in the third to take a 55-45 lead into the final period. ECI closed out the game against the Indians putting 16 more on the board to win the first- (Continued on page 2A) SMITH DRAINS TWO AGAINST PELHAM EMC now allowing patient visits in most units Emanuel Medical Center (EMC) has taken precautions to protect and maintain the health and safety of patients and staff during the Covid-19 Pandemic to prevent the spread of the virus into the hos pital. Effective March 1, 2021, EMC announced reinstating visitations except in rooms of patients who are Covid- 19 positive and/or pending Covid-19 test results. The following guidelines should be followed while visiting EMC: • Visitation hours are 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Saturday; and 1 p.m. until 6 p.m., Sunday. • All inpatient visi tors must use the front entrance only. • All visitors will be screened. • All visitors that pass the screening will receive a visitor pass and will be masked. • Visitors must be 18 years of age or older. • Only one visitor per patient at a time. Visitor must remain the same person throughout the duration of stay that day. • Visitor must remain in the patient's room when in the facility. The Tigers will host the Lovett Lions this Wednesday night for the opportunity at a Fi nal 4 berth. The state playoffs started last week and it was a tale of two games and two markedly dif ferent opponents. First up, Bleckley County visited on Wednesday for a first round contest and were treated none too kindly. Swainsboro overwhelmed the visi tors from the start, racing out to a 16-0 lead before resting their starters. The Tigers did likewise at the start of the 2 nd quarter, as Bleckley County was suffocated by Swains boro's defense while the Tigers scored the first 14 points of that quarter. The Tigers were able to rest their starters and coast to a 65-37 victory. Tigers' backcourt mates Tyler Kelly and Derrick Jones combined for 26 points to lead the way.
