VOLUME 162, NO. 25 Swainsboro, Georgia • June 23, 2021 ONE DOLLAR SPD issuing citations to unlicensed business owners who received PPP funds According to Chief Randy Ellison with the Swainsboro Police De partment, his depart ment is investigating in dividuals and businesses in the city of Swainsboro who applied for and re ceived Payroll Protection Program (PPP) Funds without a city business license. Records shows that PPP Funds in excess of $2,000,000 were re ceived by approximately 140 businesses who do not currently have a city business license in the City of Swainsboro alone. The fine for operat ing a business in the city without a license can be up to $1,000 or 6 months incarceration. Officers began issuing citations on Friday, June 18 and will continue until all un licensed businesses have been cited. "Legitimate business es who have been affect ed by COVID, by people not being able to work because of quarantine, deserve the money. But, I'm not going to sit by and allow folks to lie on applications to say that they are entitled to the money that don't even have a legitimate busi ness to operate to get these funds," said Chief Ellison. "I don't think this community or any body else expects us to do anything differently than go after these folks. If you falsify an applica tion and receive funds that you are not entitled to, then it's a bold face lie and something has to be done about it." Investigators are working hand-in-hand with the Federal Small Business Administration (SBA). A list of all busi nesses and individuals receiving PPP Funds can be found at data.clarion- ledger.com.
