VOLUME 162, NO. 26 Swainsboro, Georgia • June 30, 2021 ONE DOLLAR Community Bankers Association of Georgia Elects Frye to Board of Directors of Community Bankers Association of Georgia Zac Frye, Vice President/Swainsboro City President, Durden Banking Company, was elected to the Board of Directors of Community Bankers Association of Georgia (CB A) as Division 7 Chair. Nominations for the 2021-22 CBA Board of Directors were announced and approved at CBA's Annual Convention, held June 2- 6 at the Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island, Florida. FRYE His term began June 7, 2021. CBA was found ed in 1969 by a group of Georgia communi ty bankers to protect the political interests of locally owned commu nity banks. Representing approximately 140 com munity banks and 150 associate member compa nies, CBA offers services in three distinct areas: Legislative, Professional Development and Member Services. Partic ipants included Terry England, House Budget Chairman, Martha Wig- ton, Research Office Direc tor, Rhino Medical Supply personnel and CEO Lance Brown, Damien Scott, Emanuel Medical Center CEO, Senator Billy Hick man, Representative Butch Parrish, and other state leadership. America Knits Plant Manager Steve Hawkins and Managing Partner Dr. David Talton announced the launch of new medi cal-grade scrubs that are 100 percent cotton and 100 percent American-made. The idea for this project began several years ago but was faced with two setbacks - 1. A 100 per cent cotton fabric could not be produced in a rea sonable time frame and 2. Well, Luke and Banks Hopkins of Lyons, sons of Chris and Marilynn Hopkins, can help out with your watermelon needs for the upcoming holiday. The two boys' father, for merly of Swainsboro, has 60 acres of watermelons planted. Crews have been in the fields this week gathering melons to dis tribute throughout the United States. Luke, age 7, and Banks, age 12, are students at Robert Toombs Christian Academy. Their paternal grandparents are Ronnie and Carmen Hopkins of Swainsboro. Changes to GARH, IDE(3) policies to be voted on at upcoming BOE meeting by WHITLEY CLIFTON The Emanuel County Board of Education met Thursday, June 24, at 8:30 a.m. at the Central Office for a special called board meeting. Chairman Mason Henry called the meeting to order and wel comed all. Johnny Parker gave the invocation and John Allen Bailey led in the pledge of allegiance. Board members approved the meeting agenda as presented. Discussion of the con sent agenda included a 2021-2022 custodial ven dor management program and options for 2021-2022 pest control services. Superintendent com ments included... • Superintendent Scotty Hattaway reviewed Policy GARH modifica tions regarding employee leaves and absences with board members. • Paid Parental Leave has been added for all eli gible employees for three qualifying events. • Policy IDE (3) also saw changes, allowing home study students to partici pate in extracurricular or interscholastic activities if enrolled in and attempt ing to complete one quali fying course as defined by state law for each semes ter participating. (Continued on page 5A) City of Adrian Fourth of July celebration set for this weekend The City of Adrian will host a 4 th of July celebra tion on Sunday, July 4. Activities will begin at 1 p.m. with a car show and other activities such as a silent auction, gun raffle and vendors and entertainment. The car show will conclude at 4 p.m. with trophies given in three areas. Activities will also be available for children. Parade lineup will begin at 5 p.m. on Hall Street, and the parade will begin at 6 p.m. Music from Adrian Baptist Church and the firework finale will follow. Parade applications are available and must be submitted to the city for placement numbers to be assigned. Vendor/yard sale applications are also available and require a $25 nonrefundable appli cation fee. All proceeds will go to the Adrian Recreation Department.
