vice has incréased 132 per cént.
In Georgia the taxes for 1925
amounted to $622,922, an in
crease 0f.274; per-.centusince
1916, while the wage hill for
1925 was $4,246,597.
Although taxes form such a
“large part of the cost of pro
ducing telephone “service, we
have no objection 4o paying
our just share of tawes. This is

indicate the care and economy
observed in the business of rén
dering telephone service. :

PERRY, Ga., April 9—At a meet-’

a contract was clored with the South’
Georgia Power company a sub
sidiary of Stone and Webster Co.'
one of the largest pewer companies
of the United States, for furnishing
power to operate the water and
light system of the city. The power
company purchased the city’s light |
and water system, paying $15,000,
for same. The power company willi
furnish power to all manufacturing
plants in the city. !

Mellon Is Busy Denying
" Rumors Upon Return
NEW YORK, April 9—(P)—Sec
retary of the Treasury Andrew W.‘
Mellon returned today on the liner
Fort St. George from a two weeks’
vacation in Bermuda; denied a group
of rumors, some of which he said
were ‘“getting shepworn” and ex
pressed the orinion hat prohibition
enforcement is making “fair prog--
ress.” -
As to modification of the prohi
bition laws he ccnsidered that “a
matter of opinion and time will tell.”
“You cannot enforce the laws
against burglars and murderers com
pletely,” he said, “and it is a ques
tion of the degree to which you can
enforce the prohibition law. En
forcement has been much improved
with the reorganization of the de--i
partment and with all the work that|
has been done. I think we are mak
ing fNr progress.”’ e
As to the rumors, one forecast hic
resignation and this he classed as
shopworn saying he had never in
tended to resign. -
