Jenkins County Senior Center, more than just bingo Aged to Perfection By Lee Wilson, Special Contributor for The Times Even though the Center has been open for years, we have found that a lot of people have no idea what we’re all about. Our doors are open to any Jenkins County resident 60 years of age and older. Our goal is to provide a safe location for the county’s senior population to enjoy fellowship with others, enjoy a nutritious meal, and to remain physically active. Our Center provides daily programming in the areas of health, wellness, education, nutrition, socialization, religion, and emotional support. Although the Center is primarily county and government funded, most “extras” are gained through generous community donations and fundraising efforts of the clients and staff along with applying for grants. We celebrate EVERYTHING!!! From donning pink for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month to wearing crazy socks for National Down Syndrome Day to recognizing almost every holiday! We enjoy making projects and crafts for ourselves, but we also enjoy working on projects to give back to our community. Last Christmas we loomed hats and scarfs for the resi dents at our nursing home and in turn the nursing home staff has visited us and played games with prizes. Recently we had a spaghetti supper funder raiser and thanks to our community we raised enough money to char ter a bus and have a day trip to Savannah’s River Street and enjoy a ride and dinner cruise on the Georgia Queen. We have also enjoyed going to Magnolia Springs State Park and having a cookout especially if it involves a fish fry thanks to Mr. Charlie and Mrs. Elnora Taylor’s fishing trips! Stop by some morning and have a cup of coffee or hot chocolate with us and see what we’re all about! JCES to host Read-A-Thon beginning next week By Joe Brady, Editor for The Times The JCES will once again host a Read-A-Thon! The program gets young readers excited about reading and gives friends and family the opportunity to encourage our children to read more. “This week, we will send home instructions on how to activate your reader's personal page. This is where you will be able to view and record their prog ress,” Principal Randy Dailey explains. Parents are encouraged to activate their reader’s account by clicking on https://www.read-a-thon.eom/readers/r/BKxSnS/l and following the simple instructions. “We've chosen Read-A-Thon because it will not take much of your time, gives your child a reason to read, and helps in the development of stronger reading skills. Students will be eligible for prizes, and we will raise money to help purchase a book vending machine,” Dailey concludes.
