Tuesday afternoon the JCMS War Eagles (c-team) hosted their first home game of the
season under beautiful sunny skies that made a picture-perfect day for baseball. The young
War Eagles entered the game 1-1 on the season after having one week off from games,
and the time off was used for practice and it showed! The War Eagles put up 20 runs and
defeated the Panthers of Portal by only allowing them 10 runs. How they got to the victory
was the most exciting part.
Riley James began the game on the mound for the War Eagles and struck out the first
batter. Even though the second batter for Portal would get a triple, the defense came
through again. The third batter struck out and then the next batter up grounds into an out
to first baseman Harley Burke. The War Eagles would waste no time getting in the score
column. Chandler Cates would get a lead-off walk, followed by one of his two stolen
bases. Riley James would then single on a hard-hit ground ball allowing Cates to score.
Portal would tie the game up in the second inning, yet the War Eagles would get the bats
going again and add three more runs. The War Eagle bats were hot, but Portal got on a
hitting streak! They would score 2 in the third and 5 in the fourth taking an 8-4 lead into
the bottom of the fourth. Then the War Eagles decided they wanted the win. In the next
three innings, they would add 16 runs!
In the bottom of the 4th, it all started to turn around after Bryer Clayton walked. Even
though Clayton would advance to second on a passed ball, the Panthers would get the next
two batters out. Yet, the second out hit by Chandler Cates allowed Clayton to score. Gatlin
Oglesby would hit a ground ball to third base, followed by a Joshua Gray single. The score
was cut to 8-7. The War Eagles would take the lead and never look back in just a few more
bats. Amazingly this young War Eagles team would score 8 runs after having two outs.
Joshua Gray led the way in hits for the War Eagles. He had 3 hits on the night, added 3
RBIs, and scored three times. Harper Wilcox, Gatlin Oglesby, Bryer Clayton, and Harley
Burke all added 2 hits; Chandler Cates, Hasan Grimes, and Ryle James each had 1 hit
apiece. Bryer Clayton had the most RBIs finishing with 4.
The big hit of the game came in the bottom of the 6th inning. The War Eagles were
leading 15-10. Chandler Cates, already having a big game, drove a line drive deep into
left field. Cates was able to round all the bases for an in-the-park homerun! The second
big play of the game, also in the 6th inning came with bases loaded and Bryer Clayton up
to bat. With a 2-0 count and bases loaded, Clayton hit a deep ball to center field allowing
Joshua Gray, Harper Wilcox, and Joshua Asbury to score. This hit ended the game as the
War Eagles took a 10-run lead!
Chandler Cates hit an
in-the-park homerun on
Tuesday night against Portal
late in the game!
This is his first homerun
for the season and the first
homerun for the War Eagles
this season.
