Box 1448 to subscribe lien, Georgia 50442 Aged to Perfection at the Jenkins County Senior Citizen Center By Lee Wilson, Special Contributor for The Times Last month during Black History Month, we decided to recognize some of our local citizens who made an impact in our community. We began our program recognizing Maya Angelou and the contributions she made world with her poems and books. Myrtis Reese read aloud one of Ms. Angelou’s famous poems “Caged Bird” based on her famous book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Mary Ruffin shared with us a short story on black history. We continued our program by recognizing Mr. J. C. Douglas for his accomplishments and contributions throughout our community including being the Ag teacher to so many students and being on the board of directors for the Jenkins County Commissioners and having our agricultural center named after him. We shared many comments from former students and others from around our community who were influenced and guided throughout their younger years by not only his leadership but his friendship. We also then recognized Mrs. Ellen Douglas, Mr. J.C.’s wife. Mrs. Douglas is one of our regulars that come to the Center every day. We surprised her, by having some of her close family friends from out of town to come and surprise her that day and share some of their memories and gratitudes of Mrs. Douglas. We also shared many of Mrs. Douglas’s contributions and influences around our community. One of her former piano students, Mr. Ramsey serenaded her and everyone with a beautiful song on the piano. Mr. Ramsey almost had the piano walking at one point! Mr. Robert Johnson along with Chandra Johnson and Nichole Budgett entertained us by singing several song selections and had us clapping in our seats. We of course ended our program with what else but refreshments! Mrs. Douglas thank you for what all you have taught us with your kindness and friendship, and we hope to see you tomorrow!
