The season will officially start on March 30. The last spring training games will finish next week, and the World Baseball Classic will play the championship game Tuesday night. Ros ters for teams are slowly getting trimmed down to Opening Day depth. As promised in the last edition of the Jenkins County Times Sports, I would give my predictions for the 2023 MLB season. The Braves have won the NL East five times straight. While this is not quite the fourteen-year streak they had from 1991- 2005, the streak is still impressive. Even though I am a Braves fan, I still think this year will be the sixth straight season to win the NL East. NL West will be won by the Padres, the NL Central by the Cardi nals, AL East by the Yankees, AL West by the Astros, and the AL Central will be the Twins. The American League Championship Series will be played between the Seattle Mariners and the Houston Astros, while the National League Championship Series will be played between the At lanta Braves and the San Diego Padres. Some would say that is wishful thinking to say the Braves will have that great of a season, but the starting rotation, bullpen, starting nine, and bench are stron ger than any team in MLB. While there are many un answered questions start ing the season like, “Who will start at shortstop since Dansby Swanson has left? Who will be the everyday left fielder? And who will be the fifth starter in the rotation?” Even though these are big questions, for this year’s Braves team, there are many more answered questions than unanswered. Next week, in Count down to the New Season I will reveal my prediction of who will play in the World Series and who will win it all. Until then, enjoy the last few days of Spring Training and get excited for the 162-season that is before us. Wasden threw a no-hitter Monday night against Augusta Prep Day School, (photo submitted) Wasden Throws No-Hitter Mark Thomas Wasden, a sophomore at Edmund Burke Academy and from Jenkins County, has played some great baseball as of late. On Friday night, in the loss to Jenkins County, he hit 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, and he made some great plays in the field. However, it was nothing like Monday night against Augusta Prep Day School. Wasden did what most people dream of, he threw a no-hitter. He pitched 5 innings, threw 65 pitches, 5 strikeouts, and no walks. Congratulations to Mark Thomas Wasden on an amazing game! Baseball Region Report The high school baseball season is quickly moving! The War Eagles have twelve games remaining on their schedule, and the remaining games will be played against regional opponents. These final twelve games will determine if the War Eagles make state playoffs and if they do their position in the playoffs. While every game in the season matters, the final twelve games will determine it all for the season outcome. The War Eagles will start off facing ECI, by far the tough est opponent in the region. Presently, ECI is ranked 4 th in Class-A, Division 2, and has a record of 8-5 on the season. ECI has already played three regional games, all against McIntosh County Academy which is the 6 th ranked team in Class-A, Division 2. They defeated the Buccaneers 6-3, 15-4, and 2-1. Most would look at the records and see that MCA and ECI are your two top teams in Region 3. The next opponent for the War Eagles in regional play will be Portal. Portal started off regional play with three wins. Those three wins brought their record to 4-6. They defeated Montgomery County 23-3, 13-3, and 7-3 this past week. The War Eagles will see Montgomery County the week of April 4th. The War Eagles will be looking to get back to the GHSA State Playoffs this season after just missing the cut last sea son. If they make the playoffs, it will be their first time since the 2019 season. The War Eagles will play only one region al opponent each week, playing a three-game series against each team.
