So many activities and opportunities are happening around here! March is typically another long month, but it seems that this year it has flown by. Did you see the crane putting in the hollow core over our first floors? That was exciting for our stu dents. It is not often, if ever, that they get to see big construction. I hope that sight challenged a few of them with dreams of being crane operators. I love any opportunity for our youth in Jenkins County to see and experience anything different. Our con struction is on schedule for us to occupy the new classrooms when we start in August. We had students visit the University of Georgia this last week and others toured Southeastern Tech. We had FCCLA students at the state conference and had a student sign with a college to play base ball. We have three students from Jenkins Coun ty Schools going on the Washington Youth Tour sponsored by Planters EMC. Baseball, tennis, and track are in full swing. The sixth-grade band stu dents entertained at lunch. It is a beautiful season for our school system! I have been enjoying seeing the parents and guests coming into our elementary school to read to the students. It is so refreshing after the two prior years to have visitors back in our classrooms. Our im provement plans at each school are specific to lit eracy standards and experiencing adult readers is a huge step in encouraging our young readers. We have a third-grade book club and literacy activities in every grade level to address our reading goals in different and entertaining ways! An exciting opportunity because of our new con struction is the addition of a STEAM classroom/ lab in our elementary school. STEAM is the abbre viation for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. This class will be a “connection” (like PE, Art, etc.) so that every grade level will get to participate. They will have Makerspace areas where they can create and explore and have access to an inter-disciplinary approach to think more broadly about real world issues. Outfitting this lab is going to be a lot of fun and will provide hands- on higher level thinking activities for our students. We are doing more in our schools! Our small school system can be more than good, but great, and more than great, but amazing. Never underestimate our faculty, staff, and students! We are constantly looking for ways to improve our processes, procedures, and curriculum so that we can move to the next level... then the next. Thanks to our school board members for supporting any endeavor that moves our school system forward including our construction at the school, our forthcoming construction of a sports facility, our introduction of new classes, and continuing com mitment to doing more for our students in Jenkins County.
