Improving Your
Pastor
Lottie Moon served as a missionary to China for almost
forty years. Miss Moon also had a sister named Edmonia
Moon who served for five years on the mission field but
returned home due to the emotional strain of the work.
Edmonia's struggles remind us of the need to pray for
missionaries as well as ministers who serve local churches
and missions. On any given day, a Pastor may hear five
or more heartbreaking horror stories that are ongoing and
can't be fixed today with a wrench. Many of these problems
linger and need regular attention.
According to recent studies, more current Pastors change
occupations before retirement and choose a less stressful
career for their personal health as well as time with family.
For example, Rodney was a full-time Pastor for a dozen
years or more and is now working for a lawncare service
provider. He is still a good Christian, a faithful husband and
father but he felt the need to serve the Lord in another way.
If more people prayed for Rodney when he was a Pastor,
would he still be a Pastor today? If he heard more words of
encouragement when he was a Pastor, would he still be an
employee of a local church? We may not know the answers,
but we can all pray more for our ministers and give them
words of encouragement.
As we study the lives of the Apostles, they developed
tender hearts for people and crocodile skin in dealing with
critics, but they still needed prayer to stay in the saddle
and keep on spreading the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
When Paul wrote letters to various churches, he assured
the readers of his prayers for them, but he also pleaded for
them to pray regularly for him and other spiritual leaders.
When we send a letter, text or message, we often say the
most important part last. In 1 Thessalonians, he asked for
prayer just before he finished. "Brethren, pray for us," (1
Thessalonians 5:25).
When we speak about loving God and others, we sometimes
forget that Pastors and their families need kindness and
compassion just as much as anybody else. Therefore, the
command to love others includes laypeople, ministers and
all people. "Jesus said to him, 'You shall love the LORD
your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with
all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. The
second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself,'

Words of
Encouragement

“The Lord,
My Shepherd”
The Bible has many titles for Jesus and one of these is
Shepherd. Hebrews 13:20 calls Jesus “the Great Shepherd
of the sheep”. In John 10:10, Jesus calls Himself “the
Good Shepherd” who lays down His life for His sheep.
Shepherds care for a flock - leading them, feeding them,
healing them, protecting them. Jesus leads His flock, His
church. How does He lead His church?
Psalm 23 talks about Jesus, the Good Shepherd. King
David, who authored Psalm 23, writes this about Jesus,
“The Lord is my shepherd, I have what I need. He lets
me lie down in green pasture and he leads me beside
quiet waters. He renews my life; He leads me down the
right paths for His name’s sake.” Jesus leads His people
down the right paths for His name’s sake. The right paths
include “what I need”, “green pastures and quiet waters”
and a “renewed life”. The Bible is clear that Jesus, the
Good Shepherd leads His sheep down the right path, but
does the right path always feel like the good path?
In Exodus, God delivers His chosen people, the Israelites,
out of slavery and Egypt and promises to lead them into
the Promised Land - a land flowing with milk and honey, a
land with houses they did not build and vineyards they did
not plant, a land of freedom, but most importantly a land
where God would dwell with them. Freedom from slavery
and a land flowing with milk and honey - Israel felt like
they couldn’t get there fast enough!
Exodus 13:17-18 tells us how God led His people out
of Egypt, “When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not
lead them along the road to the land of the Philistines,
even though it was nearby; for God said, “The people will
change their minds and return to Egypt if they face war.”

POTATO
Continued from page 1
became apparent with its success that it would be more than a one-year
occurrence, it literally became a big piece of pop-culture.
It travels the country promoting the certified heart-healthy Idaho Potato
and its mission to help small charities in towns and cities with its A Big
Helping program. Not to mention that people just want to have their picture
taken with a 4-Ton Idaho potato! “We are excited to be included on the Big
Idaho® Potato Truck's Tour across the country. In conjunction with B&T
Fresh Foods, it is a great treat for us to be able to share with our community
this mammoth-sized spud. It is our mission to promote the consumption of
fruit and vegetables in the Southeast, so what better way to bring awareness
to that mission than having a 4-ton potato tell the story?!” Explains David
Sherrod, SEPC President & CEO “The Southeast Produce Council does
an incredible job promoting the consumption of fruits and vegetables. The
organization is focused on giving back to communities and bringing one-
of-a-kind experiences to its members and communities. The Idaho Potato
Commission jumped at the opportunity to have our truck stop to support the
SEPC and its mission. We hope everyone will come out to see, firsthand,
the largest Idaho potato on Earth.” Says Mark Daniels, Idaho Potato
Commission. Welcome tater team to Jenkins County! (photo by T. Fries)
