Fr. Larry's Lent:
Week 5 - Holy Week
“When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?”
—Matthew 21:10
One of my favorite services of the church year is Palm Sunday. For me, it is an
emotional rollercoaster ride.
The service begins outside the church doors where the clergy and congregation gather
waiting for worship to begin. A scripture selection describing the triumphant arrival of
Jesus into the city of Jerusalem is read.
After palm fronds are blessed, the priest loudly knocks three times on the closed church
door with the butt end of the staff of the processional cross representing the entry of Jesus
into Jerusalem and the symbolic opening of the gates of the heavenly Jerusalem. Then
there is a joyful procession into the church filled with singing and waving of palm fronds.
Shouts of “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the
Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” fill the air.
The service quickly takes a somber note as the passion play is performed by the
congregation (Matthew 26:14- 27:66). The sounds of joy that so recently filled the church
are now replaced by shouts of “Crucify him!”.
I don’t know how anyone hearing, participating in and reliving these stories could not be
profoundly and deeply moved in spirit and emotion.
This year, the Matthew 23:10 verse really stood out for me. The verses prior to this
contain the proclamations of the crowds affirming the identity of Jesus as the Messiah, the
King of Israel, and the Son of David, even as those who were not witnessing this event
and those who knew nothing of Jesus found themselves in turmoil and asking, “Who is
this?”
“Who is this?” is a wonderful prompt for guiding our prayers and meditations this last
week of Lent. Who is Jesus to you and what resonates within your soul about this? Why
is this important to you? How has the gift of his grace changed your life? How do you
explain who Jesus is to others?
One of the best ways to explain and evangelize is to truly know who Christ Jesus is
to you, and, amied with this understanding, to be able to introduce Jesus briefly and
succinctly to others.
Years ago, the pastor of the small evangelical church where I grew up said that we all
needed to have our elevator always evangelizing speech ready. At any moment, we need
to be prepared to share Christ with others. The idea of the elevator speech is that in a short
period of time, like that of an elevator ride, we can tell others about Jesus.
During this last week of Lent, the Palm Sunday service provides the contrasting
experience of the joy to be found in proclaiming Jesus as Messiah and King and reminder
of the role that our sins play in the need for Christ to die for us on the cross.
As for me, I cannot think of a better way to prepare myself for the arrival of the Risen
Lord on Easter Sunday!

The Doxology:
"Praise God From Whom
All Blessings Flow"
As most Baptist know, the hymn "Praise God from whom By Sam Eades, Publisher/Writer
all blessings flow" or also known as the Doxology, is used for
during the giving of the offering. Now, I admit, I have The Times
used this particular hymn as a prelude and postlude before.
However, most of the time, it was used every Sunday during the offertory.
When I joined the Episcopal Church years ago, I never really heard this hymn used in
the service until recently. Now as a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Statesboro, we
sing it as all offferings are brought forward. It is nice to go back to a tradition that was used
during my childhood at our home Church. Doxology is a Greek word that is described as
a “short hymn of praise to God”. The hymn was first published in 1709. The lyrics were
written by Thomas Ken in 1674. Thomas Ken was born in 1637 in Hertfordshire, England.
Thomas Ken, an Anglican Bishop, wrote the verse as the final verse to two hymns, “Awake,
my soul, and with the sun” and “Glory to thee, my God, this night.” These were intended
for morning and evening worship at Winchester College.
The morning hymn originally contained a long fourteen
stanzas.
Thomas went from being an orphaned child, raised by
his sister, to a scholar at Winchester College. He held
postions in various churches and teaching positions before
eventually becoming chaplain to Princess Mary and King
Charles II.” The story is told “when King Charles II came
to visit Winchester, he took along his mistress, the famous
actress Nell Gwynne. Ken was asked to provide lodging
for her. The story is told that Ken quickly declared his
house under repair and had a builder take off the roof, so
that he wouldn't be able to let them stay
In 1684, Thomas Ken became Bishop of Bath and Wells.
A decade earlier he’d published A Manual of Prayers
for the Use of the Scholars of Winchester College. He
encouraged his readers to “be sure to sing the Morning
and Evening Hymn in your chamber devoutly.”
This final verse Ken wrote eventually began to stand on it’s own and was sung to a tune
known as the Old 100th. This hymn is sometimes even referred to as the Old 100th.
In a 1709 edition, Ken changed “Praise him above y’ Angelick Host” to “Praise him above,
ye heavenly host,” and the lines reached their final form.
Bishop Thomas Ken died in 1711 at the age of 74.

blood”, his mother was a painter. His love of how machinery
works comes from his father being a welder, his grandad a
mechanic. His dad was also an architect and drew blueprints.
Bobby gained his mechanic experience growing up working
on vehicles. His granddad was a lead mechanic for Carolina
Pride. Bobby has worked on a variety of vehicles, like drag
race cars, bull-dozers, and other heavy-equipment vehicles.
He credits his childhood babysitter who owned a hay-bale
equipment shop. He would work there from 8-16years old,
sweeping floors and learning how to fix a variety of cars.
You might see him riding around town in a black, 1969
Chevrolet Chevelle SS. His future plans are to buy a
semi-truck to make it look like Optimus Prime, from
Transformers and to convert a chevy Camaro to make it
look like another Transformers character. Bumblebee.
You are probably wondering how Bobby ended up with
a plane and how to get it in? A friend of Bobby quotes
Johnny Cash referencing how he got the plane in, saying
“he stole that Pontiac, one piece at a time”. When Bobby
saw the plane for the first time, it had no landing gear,
the material was dry rotted, and had been sitting outside
underneath a tree in Guyton, GA. Bobby had a friend paint
the plane and he did the sheet metal work. He couldn’t
bring in the entire plane at once, so he had to bring in one
piece at the time; first the wings then the body and so on.

exercise and loves to let loose.
Geneva has always had
multiple jobs at one time. She bought a drug store, played
up the soda fountain, and turned the back into a florist.
At the same time, she rented a cafe' that was closing and
opened it for breakfast. While all that was going on, she
worked nights at Coleman's Lake Restaurant.
Never one to slack off, a church in Eatonton, needed
someone to take 27 teens to Haiti for 8 days to minister.
She agreed. She eventually sold the drug store and went
to work for the State of GA taking care of young women
that had been abused. The first Huddle House in this area
was opened in Waynesboro and she was hired to train the
waitresses.
In 1978 she started her own school, Shekinah's Love
Unlimited Christian School. After she and Glynn went to
Texas for training, she was the only teacher in a one room
schoolhouse, twenty-eight children, K-12. Students were
in four days a week and took field trips on the fifth day. If
necessary for bad language, she'd wash the kids mouths
out with soap. Instead of the nomial algebra with x's and
y's she taught the kids using cows, sheep, and pigs.
Her uncle, born in Millen, Melvin E. Thompson served
as Georgia's first Lieutenant Governor and the 70th
Governor of Georgia. Geneva loved getting to spend the
summer in Atlanta at the governor's mansion.
She and Glynn were married 30 years and had three
children. Which was a surprise each time considering she
was told she would never be able to have kids. Deborah
[Leon Burch], Anthony "Tony" [Phyllis], and Gina. She
has 9 grandkids and 13 great grandkids. When you see
her either at the auction house or around town say, “Hey
Buddy” and watch her smile!
Q. What do you feel is the difference between your
childhood and kids today?
A. They do not have any peach tree switches! So many
now do not know their fathers or do not have them in their
lives for guidance. Most do not go to church and too many
believe Easter is all about bunnies and eggs. No discipline.
Q. What are your parting Words of Wisdom.
A. The bible says the Day is going to come. Believe in
the Lord Jesus Christ.

18 So he led the people around toward the Red Sea along
the road of the wilderness.” Take note of this - God did not
lead His people down the shorter road by the cities, but on
the longer road through the wilderness. God did not lead
His people down what seemed like the good path, but He
did lead them down the right path.
How did God choose the road to lead them on? God
chose based on where they were in their relationship with
Him - “The people will change their minds and return
to Egypt if they face war.” The people were not mature
enough, not strong enough, did not know God well enough
to trust Him in a time of war, so God led them on the road
of maturity and growth instead. As God led His people
down the right road, the longer road in the wilderness, they
would grow in their relationship with Him - they would
grow in maturity, strength, knowledge, and faith.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and He leads His people
on the right path. If you don’t feel like Jesus is leading
you on the good path, stop and think about how God led
Israel, and why He led Israel down the path He did. God is
leading you down the path that is right and perfect for you
to have what you need, grow how you need to, and He will
renew you while you are on it.
Maybe your prayer today needs to be like the prayer of
the father who asked Jesus to heal his son - “Master, if you
are able, please heal my son!” Jesus replied to the father,
“If I can? Where is faith in Israel?” To which the father
immediately cried out, “I believe, help my unbelief!”
Jesus, I believe in you, I believe in Your promise, help my
unbelief and my questioning, and increase my faith and
trust in You!
