County Gamecocks Middle

who won the regional
championship just over
two weeks ago. This is
their second hampionship
in three years, and they
were regional runner-up
the other year. In that span
of 3 seasons, they are 24-4.
Screven County Middle School is coached by Gentri Wiggins (first from
left) and assisted by Gabi Becton (14 from left). The Jenkins County
connection to Millen is that Gentri is married to Millen Baptist Associate
Pastor Cam Wiggins. Gentri and Gabi are the daughters of Rodney and
Huldah Becton and the Granddaughter of Bonnie Becton of Millen. Photo

Baseball Season
Off and Running
The 2023 Major League Baseball season is 12 games into
the season, and with 150 games left, there is a lot of baseball
yet to be played. The Atlanta Braves started off on a hot
streak winning 6 out of 7 games. Then, as if the brakes were
put on, the Braves lost three straight home games. Those
three losses were followed by a 2 game-winning streak.
With 150 games left, there will be many up-and-down
streaks throughout the season.
Presently the Tampa Bay Rays are the hottest team in
baseball. They have started off the season 11-0. No doubt,
they will eventually lose a game as the chances of winning
162 games and going undefeated is nearly impossible.
While the streak of 11 games is impressive, as the Rays are
only the seventh team in history with 10 or more straight
wins to start a season. Only two teams, the Brewers (1987)
and the Braves (1982), have won 13 straight wins to start a
season.
There will be many questions that have to be answered
all season long. Teams are facing early-season injuries, and
the Braves have had their share of them. While some teams
have started off hot, like the Rays, other teams that were
favorites have started off slow. The slow teams include the
Mariners, Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets.
One piece of advice for all MLB fans, regardless of the
team you follow, do not worry too much in the month of
April or even May. The season is long. In 2021, when the
Braves won the World Series, they still had a losing record
entering August. Anything can happen in a long season.

Region Report
The last week of regional
play for the War Eagles
will take place this week, it
is also the last week of the
regular season for them.
As the season winds down,
the War Eagles have won
4 out of 5 regional games
to secure their spot in the
state playoffs. The last two
games of the season will be
against McIntosh County
Academy at home and with
two wins the War Eagles
could position themselves
as a higher seed in the
playoffs.
Montgomery County will
finish its regional play
against ECI. ECI has been
rolling through the region
all season and regardless
of what happens this week
against Montgomery
County, they will take the
number one seed in Region
3. Montgomery County
has been eliminated from
playing in the postseason.
Portal is the first team to
complete regional play
this season in the region.
They will have some non-
regional opponents to end
their season.
This year, as in other
sports. Region 3 will play
Region 2 in first-round
playoff action. If playoffs
started today, the War
Eagles would face Wilcox
County in the first round.
The first round will take
place April 27-28. State
playoffs are a best two out
of three series, and all three
games are hosted by the
higher seed.
