Christie Dykes, 57, was traveling south across the intersection of Highway 21 and Perkins Road at approximately 7:30 a.m. on April 21. According to investigators with the Georgia State Patrol, an 18-wheeler driven by Stacy Leathers of North Carolina was traveling west on Highway 21 when Dykes failed to yield, crossing the intersection, and striking the truck. Both vehicles traveled another 57 feet before coming to a stop. Ms. Dykes was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Jenkins County Medical Center. Leathers suffered no injuries. Heavy fog could have played a part in the accident. Christie was an employee with Jenkins County and was originally from Maine. She has two sons, James, and John Millett of North Augusta. A memorial service has been planned for a later date. Photo by D. Hearn Second accident sends three to hospital By Joe Brady, Editor for The Times In a second accident just hours later, two were transported to the local medical center with non-life-threatening injuries. At approximately 2:30 p m., Tamera Plair of Millen was traveling east as she exited a parking lot on Highway 25, just south of W. Winthrope Avenue. Damya Plather of an Augusta address was traveling south on Highway 25 from W. Winthrope Avenue. Plair failed to yield, striking Plather. Ms. Plair told investigators she was, “preparing to enter the road, heading back to Millen when another vehicle also entered the turn lane, blocking my view.” As the other vehicle passed her, Plair entered the lane, striking the vehicle driven by Plather. Plather explained to investigators, “I was in the right lane when I saw the other vehicle coming from McDonald’s. I didn’t think the vehicle would enter the road, but she did.” Plather and three passengers were transported to JCMC. Photo by D. Hearn. Pierce Annual BBQ Boogie changes location By Joe Brady, Editor for The Times The annual BBQ Boogie will see a few changes this year. The first change is the absence of the 5k run. “Due to limited participation, we decided to cancel the race this year,” Mandy Underwood, Chamber of Commerce Director explained. “Everyone who entered the 5k will be refunded.” The second change is the location, due to an overbooking at the Millen Community House, the Chamber of Commerce has changed the venue to the Jenkins County Recreation Department. “We already have several BBQ contestants for the annual competition, but we always need more.” The deadline to sign up for the contest is Thursday, May 4. Jenkins County Board of Education addresses diversity issues By Tyler Busch & Hannah Derisso, Reporters for The Times At Monday night’s Jenkins County Board of Education meeting, emotions ran high as dozens of concerned citizens and parents showed up to express their concerns to the board about the recent “trash can incident” at Jenkins County Middle/High School. The incident stemmed from a school project where students had to come up with an alternative way to carry their belongings to school without using backpacks. Four students decided to use a trash can and decorate it. The outrage started when a picture of the trashcan was posted to the See SCHOOL page 8 Out of sensitivity to the situation and because we feel the picture has been shown more than it deserves JCT will not publish it However, we celebrate the first black and female Chairman of our Board of Education, Mrs Mary Young and our first valedictorian of Hispanic descent, Marisol Guzman- Rangel Class A Region 3 CHAMPIONS The Jenkins County War Eagles boys ’ track team captured the Class A Region 3 Championship on Wednesday afternoon!
