A WORD TO THE WISE
Reverend Walter H.Hall
Grace Community Church
Perkins, GA
Conquering Fear
“There is no fear in love;
but perfect love casteth out
fear: because fear hath
torment. He that feareth is
not made perfect in love.”
(I John 4:18) (cf. I John
1:12).
The Scriptures reveals
two views of fear: 1) the
fear of the Lord (Psalm
112:10), and 2) the fear
that brings torment as we
see in I John 1:12. The fear
of the Lord which produces
wisdom is a positive fear
which reveres God or
stands in awe of God. This
fear acknowledges that
God exists, and we realize
that we are accountable to
Him, and, therefore, must
live to please Him. This
fear prompts the individual
to act in faith, confess
their sins, repent of them,
and accept the redemptive
work of Jesus in the cross.
This kind of fear leads to
salvation, freedom from
fear, guilt and brings the
peace of God.
There is a crippling fear,
though, that is negative.
This fear can move a
person to flight or fight.
This fear has torment and
according to John has a
solution through the love of
God. Love prompts us to
seek others; fear causes us
to shrink from others. Fear
brings its own punishment
(torment) to the one who
has not made complete
his love for God. When a
person is perfected or made
complete in his/her love
for God, there is no fear of
God’s judgment because
genuine love confirms
salvation.
I am reminded of the
little boy who feared the
dark. It was dark and his
mom asked him to go out
on the back porch and
get the broom. He said
to his mother, “But mom,
I am afraid of the dark.”
The mom, encouraging
the child, said, “Don’t
be afraid, my son, of the
dark. Jesus is out there.”
The little boy mustered up
what little courage he had
and went to the back door
and said, “Jesus, if you
are out there, would you,
please, hand me the broom,
because I am afraid of the
dark.”
We, like the little boy,
need to muster up our
courage, face our fears,
and know that Jesus will
be with us. I do not know
what fears are preventing
you from being successful
in achieving your goals,
finding peace, or that are
sapping your faith. It may
be the loss of finances and
you do not know how you
are going to make it or
provide for your family.
It may be a diagnosis of
cancer and your strength
is spent. Or you may be
beginning a new job and
there is a fear of failure.
Here is a word to the wise:
“Cast all your cares (fears)
upon Him for He careth
for you.” Trust in the Lord
with all your heart and be
perfected in God’s love
and in your love for God.
Your love and trust in God
will be your first steps to
success and conquering the
fears in your life to live a
life of peace and prosperity.

Words of
Encouragement
By Joshua Johnson,

Pastor Oak Hill
Baptist Church, Millen
“Our Words
Have Power”
“Sticks and stones may
break my bones, but words
will never hurt me!” I can
close my eyes now and hear
my friends sing this chant
on the playground. We sang
it as kids, we’ve heard it as
adults, but is it true? The
truth is that broken bones
heal quicker than hearts
broken by weaponized
words.
Words have an immense
power to hurt. We are
warned about our tongues
in James 3 - in verse 5,
“though the tongue is a
small part of the body,
it boasts great things.
Consider how a small fire
sets ablaze a large forest”,
and again in verse 8, “but
no one can tame the tongue.
It is a restless evil, full of
deadly poison.”
Our words are like
toothpaste squeezed out of
a tube - once out, there is no
way to put it back in. Once
something is said, it cannot
be unsaid; once something
is heard, it cannot be
unheard. That’s what James
1:19 warns us, “everyone
should be quick to listen,
slow to speak, and slow to
anger.” How quickly our
anger can set our tongue
on fire, and our tongue
can bum down a forest of
goodwill or friendship!
We can attack others with
our words, but we can also
love others with our words.
A principle of the Kingdom
of God is found in Matthew
12:34 - “For the mouth
speaks out of the overflow
of the heart.” Pastor Johnny
Hunt says it this way,
“What’s in the well comes
up in the bucket!” The
words we speak are only
an overflow of what fills
our heart. What is in your
heart?
Colossians 3:16 is a
good encouragement for
Christians who want to
love with their words, “Let
the word of Christ dwell
richly in you, in all wisdom
teaching and admonishing
one another through
psalms, hymns, and
spiritual songs, singing to
God with gratitude in your
hearts.” This is a cause-
and-effect statement. The
cause is “Let the word of
Christ dwell richly in you”
and the effect is all of the
beautiful speech that comes
from the heart.
Jesus’s words must be in
me if I’m going to speak like
Jesus. I read this quote just
this morning - “We cannot
be men who measure up to
the stature of Jesus Christ
without entering into a
personal relationship with
Him.” We must be filled
with Jesus (His Words, His
Spirit) if we want to speak
words of love, that build up
and not tear down.
