War Eagles Upend the Vikings
On Thursday the War Eagles
hosted the first round of the playoffs
in an anything but ordinary afternoon.
The games were originally slated to
begin at 4 with a second game to be
played shortly after the first game
ended. Friday would be reserved
for an as-needed game three. The
weather would play a factor in the
start of the games. With the threat of
rain on the horizon, officials moved
the start of Game 1 to just before 2:00
PM. The first game ended in perfect
timing, within 15 minutes of Game
1 ending the lightning sirens were
blaring causing the postponement of
Game 2.
The War
Eagles would
start Game 1
with Jackson
Lanier on the
mound. From
the opening
pitch to the last
out, Lanier was
focused! With
every returned
pitch from
the catcher,
Lanier was set
and ready to
pitch. He gave
up one hit and
one walk in the
first inning, but
the War Eagles
would get out
of the difficult
situation
stranding
runners on first
and second.
For the War
Eagles, the game started quickly.
Lanier would be walked to start off
the inning and Underwood would
hit a hard-line drive for a double
advancing Lanier to third. Then
Tyler Williams would hit a deep fly
ball that was caught, but it was deep
enough to allow for Lanier to tag up
and score the first run of the game.
The War Eagles would then add 1
in the second inning, 2 in the third
and fourth, and another 2 in the 6 th
giving the War Eagles eight runs for
the game on six hits. The War Eagle
defense, built on six strong innings
of pitching by Lanier shut out the
Vikings. The War Eagles were led
offensively by James Allen who had
three hits and three RBIs. Lanier
would finish with an impressive
seven strikeouts, walking only one
batter, and giving up only five hits.
While Game 1 was a dominating
performance. Game 2 was even more
impressive. The War Eagles would
bat first in this game as it was Game 2
of the doubleheader, and they would
jump out to a quick 4 to 0 lead after
one. Gavin Underwood was brilliant
on the pitcher's mound on Friday,
as Underwood threw a no-hitter!
In addition to his
amazing work on the
mound, Underwood
would hit his 9th
homerun of the
season in the second
inning. Currently,
Underwood is 3
homeruns away from
the homerun record
at Jenkins County
High School.
The Vikings did
get one run across the
plate. Even though
they never got a hit,
a leadoff walk and
some good hard-hit
balls on the infield
allowed the mnner
to finally advance
home. Yet, that one
lone run would not
be enough for the
Vikings. The game
was further sealed
thanks to seven
runs in the fourth
inning. The War Eagles’ big bats
were led by Gray Amerson, Tyler
Williams, Gauge Oglesby, Lane
Waters, and Reid Weathersby, all
driving in runs in the frame.
Coming up big for the War Eagles
offensively was Vance Garvin and
Reid Weathersby, both had two hits
apiece. Reid would add three RBIs
to his stat line as well.
The War Eagles will seek to
continue playing dominant-style
baseball as they travel to Folkston on
Thursday for the Sweet 16.
Gavin Underwood had two exceptional
games in the two wins versus Treutlen.
Underwood was 2 for 2 on Thursday in the
8-0 victory, and in the 12-1 victory on Friday
he was 1 for 2 scoring three runs and 1 RBI
and walking twice. He hit his 9 th homerun
of the season during the second game AND
threw a no-hitter in the 12-1 victory. Photo
