Secret
Covenants
Ray Dean Reese started traveling and singing Gospel
Music when he was a teen. He is now 83 years old. He is
still the Bass Singer for the legendary Kingsmen Quartet.
His voice is still strong, clear, and resonant. When he went
to the doctor recently, the doctor said, "I think you will live
to be a hundred!" Ray is an inspiration. His life challenges
us to raise the level of our commitment.
Currently, a low level of commitment is common in
the workplace, in civic clubs, churches and families.
Many people want rewards without the responsibilities. If
we want to do the bare minimum, then we can do so but
we hurt ourselves and everybody around us when we are
unconcerned about our duties to God and those people in
our lives. Though it's possible to be a workaholic and we all
need rest, it is time for us to recommit ourselves to honor
our commitments and not to speak empty words without
any intention to keep our promises.
When God gave the Ten Commandments, he did not
want to take anything away from us. He gave us a wonderful
list of instructions for peace and happiness throughout our
lifetimes and forever. If we cherish our special spiritual
relationship with God and love our fellow human beings as
much as ourselves, then we are as content as a bird singing
at dawn. Unselfish, giving love pleases God and brings
harmony. "Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore, love
is the fulfillment of the law," (Romans 13:10).
As Jesus died on the Cross, he sealed the New Covenant
with his own blood. A blood covenant is more serious than
most agreements. Jesus made a permanent and everlasting
commitment to us. Why would we grumble about
committing ourselves to the one who died for us? Thus,
Jesus calls us to walk closely with him daily. "Then He said
to them all, 'If anyone desires to come after Me, let him
deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me,"
(Luke 9:23).

Oct. 7, 1968-Mar. 27, 1988
It’s been 35 years since you left me to go to your heavenly
home. In one aspect it seems like an eternity and in another
like only yesterday. I know you’re saying, “Mama, please
don’t mourn for me-I’m still here, though you don’t see
me. I’m right by your side each day, and within your heart
I long to stay.
My body is gone, but I’m always near,
I’m everything you feel, see, or hear.
My spirit is free, but I’ll never depart.
If you keep me alive in your heart.
I’ll never wander out of your sight.
I’m the brightest star on a summer night.
I’ll never be beyond your reach.
I’m the wami, moist sand when you’re at the beach.
I’m the colorful leaves when fall comes around;
And the pure white snow that blankets the ground.
I’m the beautiful flowers of which you’re so fond;
The clear, cool water in a quiet pond.
I’m the first bright blossom you see in the spring.
I know God, Gary and I are your everything!”
Sadly missed by Mom.

“Better
Than Gold”
Who doesn't want to
be rich? Who doesn't
want to worry about
debt, bills, gas prices or
even the price of eggs?
You don’t have to be
greedy to think fondly
about never having to
worry about money
again. What if I told you
that there is a treasure
better than gold? What
if I told you that this
treasure could be gained
by anyone, anywhere?
What is this treasure?
The Bible says in
Proverbs 22:1 that “a
goodname is to be chosen
over great wealth; and
favor is better than silver
or gold.” The treasure
that is better than gold
is a good name, and the
favor that comes with it.
What is a good name?
Luke 2:52 says that
as Jesus grew into a
man “He increased in
wisdom and stature, and
in favor with God and
men.” This statement
is key to understanding
a good name. A good
name grows like a bank
account. A growing
bank account is the fruit
of faithful and timely
deposits; the more
deposits you put in, the
larger your bank account
will be. However, as my
mentor once told me, a
bank account may take
a long time to grow, but
it can be wiped out in a
moment by one unwise
withdrawal.
Just like a bank
account, a good name
takes time to grow,
requiring faithful
and timely deposits.
However instead of
depositing money, a
good name requires
deposits of character,
integrity, trust, and
virtue. Actions speak
louder than words when
it comes to a good name.
A good name is your
developed reputation.
Luke 2:52 gives us
one more important key
for understanding a good
name - “favor with God
and with men.” Faithful
character deposits build
favor with God and
men. If we only care
about favor with men,
this results in pride in
our hearts - which God
hates!
The key is to grow in
favor with God; as we
grow in favor with God,
He will bless us with
favor with men. God
first, then men. How
can you grow in favor
with God? By walking
in obedience to Jesus.
One wise man said that
obedience is a long,
slow walk in the same
direction. Another has
said it is a lot easier to
start the race, than to
finish it well.
Do you have a good
name? If you do, don’t
throw it away in a
moment. Thank God for
giving you a good name;
Charles Spurgeon said,
“all we can claim of
ourselves is our sin, but
everything good we have
comes from the Lord.” If
you don’t have a good
name, you can begin to
make one today. While it
is still today, God’s grace
is here - He waits for us
to repent and walk in His
ways. It takes time to
grow a good name with
God and men, but it is
worth the investment.
