Hurricane season starts June 1
Prepare before it begins
The 2023 Atlantic
hurricane season starts June
1. The best time to prepare
is before hurricane season
begins. Avoid having to
rush through potentially
life-saving preparations by
waiting until it’s too late.
Get your disaster supplies
while the shelves are
still stocked, and get that
insurance checkup early, as
flood insurance requires a
30-day waiting period.
Develop an evacuation
plan
If you are at risk from
hurricane impacts, you
need an evacuation plan.
Now is the time to begin
planning where you would
go and how you would get
there. You do not need to
travel hundreds of miles.
Your destination could be
a friend or relative who
lives in a well-built home
outside flood prone areas.
Plan several routes. Be sure
to account for your pets.
If you don’t have a vehicle,
check with local officials
to see what transportation
options they may have
available.
Assemble disaster
supplies
Whether you’re evacuating
or sheltering-in-place,
you’re going to need
supplies not just to get
through the storm but for
the potentially lengthy and
unpleasant aftermath. Have
enough non-perishable
food, water, and medicine
to last each person in your
family a minimum of 3
days (store a longer than
3-day supply of water, if
possible). Electricity and
water could be out for
weeks. You’ll need extra
cash, a battery-powered
radio, and flashlights.
You may need a portable
crank or solar-powered
USB charger for your cell
phones. And lastly, don’t
forget your pets!
Get an insurance
checkup & document
your possessions
Call your insurance
company or agent and ask
for an insurance check
up to make sure you have
enough insurance to repair
or even replace your
home and/or belongings.
Remember, home and
renters’ insurance doesn’t
cover flooding, so you’ll
need a separate policy
for it. Flood insurance is
available through your
company, agent, or the
National Flood Insurance
Program at floodsmart.gov.
Act now, as flood insurance
requires a 30-day waiting
period.
Take the time before
hurricane season begins
to document your
possessions: photos, serial
numbers, or anything
else that you may need to
provide your insurance
company when filing a
claim.
Create a communication plan
Take the time now to
write down your hurricane
plan and share it with your
family. Determine family
meeting places, and make
sure to include an out-of-
town location in case of
evacuation. Write down on
paper a list of emergency
contacts, and make sure
to include utilities and
other critical services —
remember, the internet may
not be accessible during or
after a storm.
Strengthen Your Home
Now is the time to
improve your home’s
ability to withstand
hurricane impacts. Trim
trees. Install storm shutters,
accordion shutters, and/or
impact glass. Seal outside
wall openings. Remember,
the garage door is the
most vulnerable part of the
home, so it must be able
to withstand hurricane-
force winds. Many retrofits
are not as costly or time-
consuming as you may
think. If you’re a renter,
work with your landlord
now to prepare for a storm.
And remember - now is
the time to purchase the
proper plywood, steel,
or aluminum panels to
have on hand if you need
to board up the windows
and doors ahead of an
approaching storm.
Hymns That Touch thp Heart

"Shall We Gather at the River"
Back when I was
around eleven years old,
I remember swimming
in the river. We had just
moved on twenty acres of
land and built a new house.
There was a river that went
through the back part of
our land. One day my Dad
built us a river swing. All
of us would spend hours
swinging on that old rope
with a large inner tube and
dropping into the river.
This is one of my fondest
memories, growing up as
a child. I know that most
kids today would not even
know what dropping in
the river meant or most
Robert Lowry
have never experienced
it. However, I recommend
any Grandparents out there,
should take each of their
Grandchildren swimming
in the river. They would
enjoy it and make
memories to remember for
years to come.
When I was younger,
my Church would hold
"Old Fashioned Days" for
its parishioners and have
a baptism in that river. I'm
sure some Churches still do
that today.
All the Church members
would gather at the river
and those that wanted to
be baptized or wanted
to renew their baptism
would walk in the river and
receive a baptism through
the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Ghost. And yes, one
of the hymns we would
sing would be, "Shall we
gather at the River."
This hymn was written
in 1864, by Robert Lowry, a
poet and composer. Lowry
was bom in Philadelphia on
March 12, 1826. From an
early age he showed a great
love for music. He served
as minister at Hanson
Place Baptist Church in
Brooklyn, New York. And
the tune to the hymn was
called "Hanson Place."
Lowry described the
inspiration of the song by
saying “One hot afternoon
in July 1864, I was resting
on the sofa, visions
of heaven pervaded
my senses. I saw the
bright golden throne
room and a multitude
of saints gathered
around the beautiful,
cool, crystal, river of
life. I was filled with
a sense of great joy. I
began to wonder why
there seemed to be
so many hymns that
referenced the river
of death, but very
few that mentioned
the river of life. As I
pondered, the words
and music. Shall We
Gather at the River came to
my heart and mind.”
This particular hymn
has been used in many
movies and television
shows throughout time.
Some that come to mind
are Stagecoach in 1939,
Wagon Master in 1950,
The Oregon Trail in 1959,
Major Dundee in 1965
and was featured in many
episodes of "Little house
on the prairie" in the 1970's
& 80's. And there are many
others.
The song's lyrics refer to
the Christian concept of the
anticipation of restoration
and reward, and references
Revelation 22:1-2 - "a
crystal-clear river with
water of life, issuing from
the throne of heaven, all
By Sam Eades, Publisher/Writer
for
The Times
presented by an angel of
God."
Robert Lowry died on
November 25, 1899, at
his funeral it was said “Dr.
Lowry was a great and
good man, and his life, well
spent, is highly worthy of a
place among the world’s
greatest gospel song and
hymn writers.” Sing with
me
Shall we gather at the
river
Where bright angel feet
have trod
With it's crystal tide
forever
Flowing by the throne
of God
(C) Yes, we'll gather at
the river
The beautiful, beautiful
river
Gather with the saints at
the river
That flows by the
Throne of God
On the margin of the
river
Washing up its silver
spray
We shall walk and
worship ever
All the happy golden
day
E're we reach the
shining river
Lay we every burden
down
Grace our spirits will
deliver
And provide a robe and
crown
[Chorus]
Soon we'll reach the
shining river
Soon our pilgrimage will
cease
Soon our happy heart
will quiver
With the melody of
peace
