Dehydration in Elderly People
Maintaining a healthy
balance of water can
sometimes be more
important for seniors than
it is for younger people.
As a result, older people
are more likely to get
dehydrated. Dehydration
in the elderly can be
serious. Did you know
dehydration is one of the
top ten reasons for seniors
to be hospitalized?
As we age, our bodies
contain less water. We also
have a weakened sense of
thirst and sometimes we
don’t realize we need to get
something to drink.
Many of our medications
can act as diuretics and
can also contribute to
dehydration.
It’s important to be aware
of the signs and symptoms
of dehydration. In the
elderly, the effects can
progress quickly, so you
must act fast if you suspect
dehydration. Some of the
signs of mild dehydration
can be cracked lips, dry
mouth, dry skin, and less
urination than normal.
Dehydration can also cause
fatigue, memory problems.
poor concentration,
headache, and sometimes
irritability.
Many foods can contain
a lot of water. Vegetables,
most fruits and soups
can all contribute to your
daily fluid intake. You
can be creative and make
popsicles with fruit juice
or blending smoothies with
fresh greens! If you prefer
flavor over plain water you
can add sugar free flavored
drops to you water.
Drink you a glass of
water and enjoy your day!

Rotary welcomes Val and Sal of JCHS
By Hannah Derriso, Reporter
for
The Times
The Jenkins County
Rotary Club welcomed the
first Hispanic Valedictorian
in Jenkins County history,
as well as the Salutatorian,
to speak at the recent Rotary
Meeting. Marisol Guzman-
Rangel, the 2023 JCHS
Valedictorian, is the daughter
of Enrique Guzman and
Elizabeth Rangel. An active
member of the Jenkins
County FFA, Marisol plans
to attend Georgia College
and State University to
obtain a bachelor’s degree in
biology. When asked what
her plans were after college,
Marisol said that it is her
dream to work in the field of
Forensics. During her speech
to Rotary, Marisol credited
her parents, especially her
mother, for encouraging her
and pushing her to always
be the best she could be. She
stated while there may have
( ir-
been challenges and regrets
along the way, she wouldn’t
change any of them as
each of them were learning
experiences that helped her
grow into the person she is
today.
Salutatorian Jackson
Fanier is the son of Ernest
and Ginger Fanier. Jackson
played varsity baseball for
Jenkins County High School
his entire high school career,
as well as football his senior
year. After graduating
high school,
attend Georgia Southern
University where he will
major in Exercise Science.
Jackson stated that he would
love nothing more than to be
able to come back to Jenkins
County as an Athletic
Trainer for Jenkins County
Sports. Congratulations to
both Valedictorian Marisol
and Salutatorian Jackson
for all their achievements.
