How to Honor
Your Mother
Warrick Dunn played in the NFL for 12 seasons. His
most impressive stat: He’s built 200 homes for single
mothers. And he’s not done.
When Warrick Dunn was a sophomore, he led his team
to the state championship. When he was a senior, his
mother, who worked in law enforcement, was shot and
killed, leaving Warrick to care for his five brothers and
sisters.
It’s a lot of weight to put on a young man’s shoulders,
but Warrick handled it well, still graduating from high
school and earning a scholarship to Florida State. At the
same time, Warrick had to grow up fast, take on adult
responsibilities while still charting his own course.
He used his mother’s life insurance to fulfill one of his
mother’s dreams: to buy a house for the family. And as a
freshman, he led Florida State to a national championship.
His effort paid off with an NFL contract, and in his first
year for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Warrick not only
continued to take care of his siblings, he began Warrick
Dunn Charities to help single mothers achieve first-time
homeownership. He spent 12 years in the NFL, even
though many thought he was too small. Perhaps being
underrated drove him, or maybe it was the need to provide
for his family and make his mother proud. Whatever his
motivations, Warrick achieved rare greatness as an athlete
and as a human being.
Adversity comes in many forms, and often to the people
we least likely expect. Warrick’s drive and example not
only help single mothers but also inspire them to continue
their upward journey. Over 90% of them are still in their
homes, working hard, getting an education, taking care of
their families and thankful for the start that Warrick Dunn
gave each of them.
On the field, Warrick Dunn played comerback,
quarterback and running back. Since retiring, he has
been playing give-back. Since 1997 he has helped over
200 single parents and over 500 dependents achieve first
time homeownership. He works closely with Habitat for
Humanity to build and furnish the homes and provide
down-payment assistance. He also works with other
professional athletes, guiding them to make a difference
in their communities.
Perhaps most remarkable, Warrick Dunn later met with
his mother’s killer and offered forgiveness. Seems life is
too short to harbor hate and bitterness. For each of us,
we can face our challenges, great or small, with the same
courage.

The month of May brings so much excitement! We finish
up testing. We have Field Days and field trips. We celebrate
Honors and our Seniors will graduate. May wraps up the
school year and ushers in the summer. The weather is
typically amazing in May, and we spend more time doing
activities outside. What a beautiful month!
As our Milestones testing is ending this week, I know a
lot of elementary and middle school students (and staff!)
are relieved. I remember as a teacher just dreading testing
weeks. I wanted the students to realize the importance of
demonstrating what they knew, but I didn’t want them
to be nervous as cats as they completed the booklets. We
had grapes for snacks and drank plenty of water, so those
brains were well hydrated! And thousands of pencils were
sharpened in preparation.
Which brings another interesting point. All our testing is
online now and has been for a few years. Our little ones
are more proficient than we were at that age for sure! Each
student is set up with a Chromebook of his/her own. They
even type their own essays! Does anyone remember the
first big, clunky computers that we worked on in the late
‘80s? There are no more requirements for those number two
pencils or scantrons. We have come a long way!
Luke talks about being a teacher and coach when he
grows up. I tell him about all the technology he will have
to work with that I did not. LCD panels? No, chalkboards.
YouTube? No, filmstrip projectors. Business classes making
digital magazine covers? Nope! There is so much more! As
much as technological advances are important. I’m glad to
see students still involved with their hands in classes too.
I appreciate that we have the tools, and the teachers, that
immerse our students in both.
May is also a time to receive scholarships, which happens
at the High School Honor’s night. This year I began
working with the MLK, Jr./Charles Beale Scholarship
fundraising committee. This scholarship, along with the
other local scholarships in our community, are critical to
our students. These monies help so many of our students
pay for incidentals while they are in college. Thank you to
all who sponsor and work on scholarship opportunities for
our students!
Before we know it, graduation will be here. Hold on to
your children tight! For the days are long, but the years are
short. I look forward to watching and participating where
I can in all the activities this May. Happy last month of
school!
