Qcj The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh
me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He
restoreth my soul: ne leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's
sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will
fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou
anointest my head with oik my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mer
cy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell m the house of the
Lord for ever.

Georgia sets presidential primary
Special
to
The Times
Georgia’s 2024
presidential primaries
will place next March 12,
Secretary of State Brad
Raffensperger announced
Thursday.
“Georgia is a bellwether
state,’’ Raffensperger said
during a news conference
at the state Capitol,
acknowledging the Peach
State’s relatively new status
as one of a handful of swing
states in national politics.
“If you can win in Georgia,
you will win nationally.’’
In announcing the mid-
March date, Raffensperger
- a Republican - rejected
a recommendation by
the Democratic National
Committee late last year
that Georgia’s presidential
primaries be moved up to
February, which would
have made Georgia the
fourth state to vote.
Democrats argued an
early primary date in
Georgia would have added
to the diversity of the
electorate during the early
primaries. Iowa and New
Hampshire, currently the
first states to hold party
caucuses or primaries, are
majority white.
Emory University
finance professor Thomas
More Smith released a
study in February that
showed early primaries
in Georgia could generate
nearly $220 million in
economic impact.
“An earlier primary
would give Georgia voters
and national candidates
the opportunity to interact
sooner - making our state
the proving ground for
candidates of either party -
and put Georgia voters and
leaders in a position to drive
the national discussion
on issues and industries
important to our state,’’
said U.S. Rep. Nikema
Williams, D-Atlanta,
chairman of the Democratic
Party of Georgia.
But Raffensperger
said holding the Georgia
primaries in mid-March, a
week after multiple states
vote on Super Tuesday -
would work to Georgia’s
advantage both politically
and economically.
“We believe a March 12
date maximizes Georgia’s
influence and has the
greatest economic impact,’’
he said.
Two weeks of early
voting will take place prior
to the primaries.
Democrat Joe Biden
easily won the party’s
Georgia primary in 2020
with 75% of the vote,
building on momentum
from his first primary win
in South Carolina. Biden
then went on to become
the first Democrat to carry
Georgia since Bill Clinton
in 1992 when he narrowly
defeated Republican
President Donald Trump to
win the state’s 16 electoral
votes.
"Savior, like a
Shepherd lead us
Henry Francis Lyte
Recently I heard a version of the Hymn, "Savior, like a
Shepherd, lead us" and I was truly moved. This particular By Sam Eades, Publisher/Writer
version was done acapella by a choir. It reminded me of a funeral where I sang>*his hymn. The
lady who died, was very special to me. Her name was Ms. Winnie, and shTiffidDMPiSnpression
on me from the very onset of our meeting each other. There was nothing she could not do. She
active in our Senior Adult Group, "The Joy Club." She gave privately to the needy, taught Sunday
School, visited Church members every week, was the head of our Church kitchen and was a beacon
of light on Sundays to everyone who entered our worship service. One day she shared with me
her favorite hymn, "Savior, like a Shepherd lead us." She said, "if it were not for the Shepherd
leading us, we would be lost just like sheep."
I remember on one occasion I had planned a "40's dinner club" for our seniors. Most all of our
senior adults had signed up, which was usually over 150. The dress was 1940's for the night.
Everyone was decked out. Ladies in dresses and men in suits from the forties. Then Ms. Winnie
comes in dressed in a beautiful satin green hoop dress, diamond earrings, necklace, etc. You
could tell she was ready for a swell time. One special thing she said to me that night that I will
never forget was,” Sam, I do believe the Shepherd sent you to us. This was the most fun I have
had in a very long time."
Never forget what impression you leave on others. Always remember, the Shepherd will lead
you in the correct path if only you ask.
Now, the hymn "Savior, like a Shepherd lead us" did not really have an author. The poem was
attributed to an English woman named Dorothy A. Thrupp. However, she did not write the poem.
The mystery of the authorship of the words goes back to the 1830s,
when the poem made its first appearances in Thrupp’s Hymns for
the Young (c. 1830)
In 1836, a magazine titled "The Children’s Friend" was published.
It had made reference to the poem and suggested it could have
been written by possibly Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) who had
written similar words previously. British hymnologist, J. R. Watson
notes, "Although the authorship remains in doubt, the style of the
vocabulary, rhythm and content would suggest that Thrupp, rather
than Henry Francis Lyte, was the author."
It was more than twenty years later that the tune we presently know
was composed by the American musician William Bradbury. When
Bradbury composed this tune, however, he modified the original
words meant for children and broadened the meaning to include all
the congregation. Then, with some modernizing of the language,
the text was standardized as it appears today.
I have to wonder why this hymn has been so successful for nearly
two hundred years. I guess the most likely answer is found in the
theology of the hymn itself. Since the hymn was originally meant for Children, Thrupp would
have wanted the essence and message of a caring Christ who loves all children. My favorite verse
would have to be verse one. We see Christ portrayed as a shepherd offering care and guidance to
his flock as well as preparing for service and Christian Life. Even though we really don't know
who the true author was, whoever wrote these words had a deep theological message to share.
Please sing with me
Savior, like a shepherd lead us,
Much we need Thy tender care;
In Thy pleasant
pastures feed us,
For our use Thy folds prepare:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us,
Thine we are;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us,
Thine we are.
We are Thine, do Thou befriend
us,
Be the guardian of our way;
Keep Thy flock,
from sin defend us,
Seek us when we go astray:
Thou hast promised
to receive us,
Poor and sinful though we be;
Thou hast mercy to relieve us,
Grace to cleanse,
and pow'r to free:
Early let us seek Thy favor,
Early let us do Thy will;
Blessed Lord
and only Savior,
With Thy love
our bosoms fill:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast loved us,
love us still;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast loved us,
love us still.

Venturing out and about
Have you walked
through a cemetery lately?
At the Senior Center,
we’ve begun walking
outside since the weather
has been nice. We’ve
walked around the Center
and have been venturing
over to the city cemetery.
It’s really nice walking
down the roads and under
the old trees offering
canopies and shade.
There are so many unique
headstones and monuments
dating back to the 1800’s.
We found it interesting
to read the names and the
birthdates and dates of
death on the stones while
realizing how young so
many were at their death.
Many of the monuments
are so decorative and
impressive. It’s really fun
to imagine what so many of
their everyday lives were
probably like and how
simple things were long
ago. It’s entertaining to
visualize what their family
conversations may have
been around their dinner
table at night. Reading
some of the names on
the headstones that are
the same as ours makes
us wonder, could they be
distantly related to us?
While walking up and
down the roads you notice
the little park areas that
are scattered throughout
the cemetery and all of the
colorful flowers that are
placed on the graves. The
small benches that are on
so many of the family lots
provide a place for one to
sit and visit.
If you haven’t walked
through a cemetery lately,
you need to try it. You’ll be
surprised at how peaceful
it can be and the different
ones walking around
for exercise while some
visiting gravesites and
placing flowers around and
some even just relaxing
and unwinding after a
hectic day.
Next time we walk
through the cemetery,
maybe we’ll run into you...
