I took public speaking in
college. I loved researching
and writing speeches
but was a wreck when
it was time to speak. I
had limited time in high
school to speak, and I
knew the people around
me and felt infinitely more
comfortable. That class
pushed me right into panic
mode. I knew, though, that
I had to do it if I was going
to be a teacher! Little did I
know that I would need it so
much for my career. I enjoy
it now, thank goodness.
Speaking of speaking
(ha), did you know that
the Future Farmers of
America (FFA) is not just
about farmers? I mention
that note because this last
week I not only attended
the FFA awards ceremony,
but I also heard a speaker,
our Valedictorian, Marisol
Rangel Guzman, who is an
active FFA member, speak
at the Millen Rotary Club
meeting.
FFA is a youth
organization that prepares
members for leadership and
careers. And yes, the careers
include those in farming
and agriculture, but so
many other occupations as
well. What I see from their
experiences in FFA from
our students, though, are
amazing speaking abilities.
For example, Marisol, who
was such a delight speaking
at the Rotary meeting. It’s
no wonder after watching
a student led FFA meeting
where the officers speak
with ease and authority
in front of an audience
of students, teachers, and
parents. The opportunities
for practice with public
speaking in FFA have
helped so many students
with confidence.
I try my best to encourage
our students to participate
in clubs, band, ROTC, 4H,
or sports. The camaraderie
and bonding that takes
place from belonging to a
group is so important for
our youth. Perfomiing or
playing for an audience
builds confidence, too.
Our Salutatorian, Jackson
Lanier, also spoke at
Rotary. He was prepared
and did not seem nervous
at all. I feel certain that
spending a major portion
of his time on a pitcher’s
mound has prepared him
for the attention of a crowd.
I understand that not all
kids are all fired up to join.
I had a son like that. I could
only get him to participate
in karate for years. And
karate is really a solitary
venture. Luckily, Pace’s
love of music put him
right into the band in the
seventh grade and then his
future military dreams put
him right into JROTC this
year. He loves them both
and I am glad he was brave
enough to make those
decisions. Luke wants to
participate in everything,
so he won’t struggle with
participating in clubs and
sports. Having experienced
both sides, I understand
it’s not always easy, but I
still think it’s worth it to
strongly encourage kids to
join groups!
