thejenkinscountytimes.com The Jenkins County Times Friday, May 19, 2023 - Page 3 Pastor Jordan Clayton Senior pastor at East Burke Baptist Church in Sardis. “10) For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth.” Zechariah 4:10 People in Zembbabel’s day complained when they saw the completed temple. They said, “this is nothing like Solomon’s temple, nowhere near as grand or luxurious." The king’s response was recorded in this scripture, and it explains that small things must come before bigger ones can happen. This scripture reminds us to not be discouraged if you look out and see small numbers in your church or buildings that need repair. God may just be planning something miraculous for you there. I heard a story some time ago that made a real impression on my heart. It was about a tiny country church with a very small congregation. The pastor and church secretary were discussing the end of the year numbers, and the discussion went as follows... Church membership, six souls. Church offering this year, $185. Church expenses, $300. Souls saved this year, only one. Name of the person who got saved, Billy Graham. You never know what wonderful things can come from very meager beginnings. Never worry about numbers or the results of your labor. Just be faithful to the calling God has placed in your heart and leave the rest to Him. He will do more than you could imagine if your heart is sincere, and it's set on serving him. You know what's the fastest growing thing in Jenkins County besides the roadside weeds? Their chicken sandwich is so good, some have called it “the Lord’s chicken” in jest. Their customer service is so exceptional that it really has become the one place you can count on not to have a bad experience, and if you do happen to have a bad experience, it’s a complete shock! Three things are guaranteed in life: death, taxes, and exceptional Chik-fil-A customer service. What amazes me most about Chik-fil-A though, is their drive-thru line! Can we just admit that we are not good at putting others first? Especially on a brief lunch break, on a Monday, in a fast-food drive-thru line. Chik-fil-A’s drive-thru is the Taj Mahal of drive-thru lines, with team members meeting you as soon as you pull up, to take your order, and make sure that your food is ready as soon as you get to the window (and many times before you even get there). It is a complicated drive-thru line though, with two lanes merging into one. However, what amazes me is that the same people that will cut you off in other drive- thru lines (or even on the road after you leave Chik- fil-A) will obediently and graciously take turns, letting someone else go first, to keep the two lanes merging! Why does this work at Chik-fil-A and nowhere else? What is it about the Chik-fil-A drive-thru that’s different? I think the answer is culture and leadership. Chik-fil-A leadership decided that they would excel at customer service, so they built their business with a service culture. The key word here is service. Because Chik-fil-A serves their customers so well, that culture of service influences even rushed-for-time commuters in the drive-thru! While I understand Chik-fil-A is a secular, for-profit corporation and I am not ascribing to them motives of ministry, there is a biblical principle at work here. I would even argue that the most successful business models employ time-tested biblical principles. The principle that I see at work is the principle of serving others like Jesus. Jesus said in Luke 22:27, “Who is greater? The one who sits at the table to be served, or the one doing the serving? Isn’t it the one sitting at the table? Yet I am among you as one who serves.” Jesus set the example of service, by serving others Himself. This is why Paul in Philippians 2:3-5, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others. Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus.” Evidently, the Philippians were cutting each other off in the drive-thru line! They were looking out for themselves and when Paul needed to correct them, he used the example of Jesus being a servant. How can you serve others today? This week? This year? Is there a problem at work, at home, or at church where people are being self-centered and “cutting each other off’? Maybe you are the problem, and you are setting the example and creating a culture of “me-first”. Adopt the attitude of Christ - “I am among you as one who serves” - and see if others don’t rise to the standard of exceptional service and follow your example. Help visitors find you!
