BRAD ASBURY
WAR EAGLE

Under the
Bleachers
This week is the last
week of school, which also
means an end to a very
successful sports season for
Jenkins County Schools.
The team debuted in a new
GHS A fomiat which placed
Jenkins County in Class A,
Division 2. Familiar foes
Portal, McIntosh County
Academy, and ECI were
part of Region 3, and new
opponent Montgomery
County rounded out the
region. Starting next week
in the Jenkins County
Times Sports, we will take
a two-week look back at
the success of our local
athletes.
As of writing this
article tonight, ECI was
in the GHSA Baseball
championship game of the
Class A Division 2. They
lost the first game in a best-
out-of-3 series. They were
playing Charlton County
in the championship
game; this is the team that
eliminated the War Eagles
in the Sweet 16.
In the days ahead, sports
news will be very slim as
middle and high school
sports have come to
an end. Next week,
included with the look
back, we will release the
football schedule and then
in the week to follow the
softball schedule. I will
also plan to give you a
“food” tour at Truist Park
in Atlanta. What else
do you want to read about
in sports this summer?

want to read about!
Those who follow
baseball, or who have
played baseball understand
the uniqueness of a hitting
slump. Some call it a
phenomenon unique to
baseball. Unlike slumps
in other sports, baseball
players on the professional
level have often talked that
a slump leaves you feeling
like it is your last day to ever
play the sport. A former
Mets baseball player David
Wright stated, "When
you're in a slump, you go
to bed at night and you
lie there and your mind is
racing and you think about
everything imaginable:
your bat model, your bat
size, your pitch selection,
how you are wearing your
pants," Wright said. "But
when you're going good,
you sleep very well."
I have seen the youngest
of players whom I have
coached try to change bats,
use a teammate’s bat, or
do other such things. The
reality is, even though
baseball is different from
all the other sports when
it comes to “slumps,” all
athletes in every sport
have their off days.
Unfortunately, it is what
athletes do in the “slumps”
that make the difference.
The idea behind “Under
the Bleachers” is that
sports connect to life and
teach us many lessons,
and sports connect to our
theology (what we believe
about God). Slumps in
sports are much like life.
We all go through moments
that are, at times, hard to
keep pushing forward. We
feel like the “wind has been
taken out of our sails.” We
declare Murphy’s Law
loudly, “Anything that can
go wrong will go wrong.”
Unfortunately, when
there are days, weeks,
months, and even a year
like this we are filled with
anxiousness and worry. We
feel as if the trial will never
end. Somedays we crawl
under the bleachers, hope
no one finds us, and just
cry. When Job was in this
situation, he declared, “I
know my Redeemer lives.”
We have to remember we
have a Savior who lives
and who never leaves us.
Trust Him, all things are in
His hands. The “slumps”
will come, but it is who we
trust in that will make the
difference between getting
through it or giving up.
Lastly, do not get lost
“under the bleachers.” Too
often we need to be in the
bleachers with everyone
else. Or, better yet, we need
to stay in the game, stay
away from the bleachers,
and mn full force into the
battle!
