Page 10 - Friday, June 2, 2023 The Jenkins County Times thej enkinscountytimes .com A Year of Sport’s Success: Football The Jenkins County War Eagle football team completed one of its most successful seasons during the 2022 school year. The War Eagles finished their inaugural year in Class A Division 2 with a 7-4 overall record and 3-1 in regional play. The great record in regional play allowed the War Eagles to host the playoffs for the first time in several seasons and earning regional runner-up. The season started off for the War Eagles with a bang. The team traveled to Treutlen County, faced a weather delay due to stomis, and the War Eagles rained on the home opener for the Vikings with a 40-0 win. The home opener for the War Eagles would be spoiled the next week when Johnson County defeated the War Eagles 24-17. Johnson County finished its season as the 4 th ranked team in Class-A Division 2. The War Eagles would have additional non-conference wins over East Laurens, Claxton, and Cross Creek before regional play would begin. The War Eagles would drop their first regional game on the road at McIntosh County in what was one of the best-played games of the whole season. The game ended after four overtimes with MCA coming out on top 27-21 in the end. After that game a blowout win over Montgomery County by a score of 53-7. It was the third regional game of the season that made the most noise in the area. The War Eagles, on a Thursday night, traveled to rival ECI. In what is one of the fiercest long-time rival games in the area showed itself on the football field. The game featured everything a rivalry game should feature. There were hard hits, big offensive plays, tough defensive stands, and good play by special teams. The War Eagles came out on top for the second time in three seasons defeating the Bulldogs on their field. The War Eagles would get the win over Portal in the next game and then host Dooly County in the playoffs. Hosting the playoffs is truly a reward for a successful season preventing the host team from having to travel a long distance. Unfortunately, the War Eagles would lose a nail-biter 22-21. The JCHS football team celebrated many successes on the football field. This included sixteen players being named to the Region 3 All-Region team. One of the award winners was Marcus Golphin who was named the co defensive player of the year. Eleven of the award winners were sophomores and juniors. The War Eagles graduated just five players from this past season leaving high hopes for the 2023 football season.
