Power outages upset
us because we need
electricity and running
water. To address this
problem, some people buy
gas powered generators to
keep refrigerators, freezers
and air conditioners going
if the lights are off for a
long time. In recent years,
automatic generators
became available. These
machines detect a power
outage within thirty
seconds even if someone
is not home. Of course,
automatic generators cost
several thousand dollars,
but you don't ever lose
power if you have it.
Jesus is better than
an automatic standby
generator because Christ
is eternal. Therefore, the
Lord is always ready to
help and won't ever need
repair. He is completely
reliable. If we follow Jesus,
then we don't have to worry
about stumbling around in
the dark since Jesus lights
our way. The best energy
source is the living God.
"Then Jesus spoke to them
again, saying, 'I am the
light of the world. He who
follows Me shall not walk
in darkness, but have the
light of life,'" (John 8:12).

God of Heaven. When the
Israelites were hungry, God
sent bread down to them.
Their survival depended
upon God's provision. The
steady and miraculous
flow of food constantly
reminded the people of
God's power to do wonders
and of God's compassion
for us when we have needs.
Therefore, Jesus explained
that he is spiritual bread for
souls and better than the
manna sent in Moses' day.
"For the bread of God is
He who comes down from
heaven and gives life to the
world," (John 6:33).
When all our resources
are gone and we reach the
end of our lives, God gives
us strength to live again
after this life is complete.
When Jesus raised Lazarus
from death to life, he
demonstrated his unlimited
power to restore power for
living now and forever.
"Jesus said to her, 'Your
brother will rise again.'
Martha said to Him, 'I
know that he will rise again
in the resurrection at the
last day. Jesus said to her,
'I am the resurrection and
the life. He who believes in
Me, though he may die, he
shall live,' " (John 11:23-
25).

We like to share stories with each other at the Senior
Center from time to time that has a good message. One we
shared recently was about the history of ‘GRANDMA’S
APRON’. Some of you may have read this before but it’s
good enough to share again. The main use of Grandma’s
apron was to protect her dress underneath because she only
had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons
than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with
that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from
the oven.
It was also wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on
occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying
eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be
finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal for hiding
places for shy kids!
And when the weather was cold. Grandma wrapped it
around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent
over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen
in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After
the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in the apples that
had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was
surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in
a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready. Grandma walked out onto the
porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time
to come in from the fields to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something
that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many
purposes!
Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the
window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the
window sill to thaw.
They would go crazy now trying to figure how many germs
were on that apron.
I don’t think I ever caught anything from an apron but love...

Ephesians 3:20 - “Now
to Him who is able to do
far more abundantly than
all that we ask or think,
according to the power at
work within us.”
Last week I had the
opportunity to attend
the Ligonier National
Conference in Orlando.
This conference is a
preaching conference and
believe it or not, preachers
need to be preached to
also! After the first night’s
session, while back at the
hotel I received a phone
call from my oldest son,
Jude. He was distraught
and needed my help - he
couldn’t find his Hardy
Boys book. Jude was
beside himself, in tears
because he had searched
everywhere in the house
and couldn’t find his book!
“Daddy, I need you! I know
you can find it. I need to
read it tonight before going
to bed.”
If I was at home, I could
have helped him search
for it, but what he didn’t
understand was that I
was more than 300 miles
away. I did not have the
ability to help him in his
time of need. Talk about
feeling helpless! I felt a
deep longing in my heart
to meet his need, but I was
unable to do it.
Ephesians 3:20 tells us a
beautiful truth about God -
He is always able to meet
us with help in our time
of need. God is able. He is
present and He is able. In
fact, Ephesians 3:20 says
that not only is He able,
but He can do far more
abundantly than we ask.
One way this verse is
illustrated in scripture is
through salvation. Romans
5:8 says, “but God shows
his love for us in that
while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.” While
we were still in our sin,
not good, not thinking
of, wanting, or loving the
Lord, and helpless to do
anything to help ourselves,
God sent His son Jesus
to die for us, meeting
our greatest need - to be
saved from sin. Hebrews
7:25 says, “Consequently,
he is able to save to the
uttermost those who draw
near to God through him,
since he always lives to
make intercession for
them.”
Another way Ephesians
3:20 is proved true is
through prayer. God will do
more than we ask, but He
works through our asking
as well. In Matthew 7:7-11,
Jesus uses the illustration
of the love of a father, to
show us the love of our
Heavenly Father towards
His children, ““Ask, and it
will be given to you; seek,
and you will find; knock,
and it will be opened to
you. For everyone who
asks receives, and the
one who seeks finds, and
to the one who knocks it
will be opened. Or which
one of you, if his son asks
him for bread, will give
him a stone? Or if he asks
for a fish, will give him
a serpent? If you then,
who are evil, know how
to give good gifts to your
children, how much more
will your Father who is in
heaven give good things
to those who ask him!”
In “how much more”,
we see the same echo of
Ephesians 3:20, “far more
abundantly”.
God is willing and able to
meet our needs, even more
abundantly than we can
imagine because He loves
us! He showed His love
for us by sending His son
Jesus to die for our sins. He
shows His love for us by
hearing and answering our
prayers. Do you believe
that God is able? Do you
believe that He loves you
and delights to meet you
in your need? Will we call
Him and plead with Him
to help us, like Jude called
and pleaded with me? Oh,
and yes, Jude found his
book!
