Here I Am, Lord
I have to say that I love
a good hymn. I am sure you
know that by now. I love
the way the lyrics make me
feel when I remember what
a wonderful God we serve.
It can lift and revive the
most empty spirit.
I was raised in the Baptist
Church and in the last 10
years found the Episcopal
Church. The hymns are
different, but give the same
message. It was once said,
that "we all worship in
different ways, but our goal
is the same." One of my
favorite Episcopal hymns
is "Here I Am, Lord".
"Here I Am, Lord", also
known as "I, the Lord of Sea
and Sky" is a hymn written
by the American composer
of liturgical music, Dan
Daniel Schutte
Schutte in 1979. Its words
are based on Isaiah 6:8 and
1 Samuel 3:4.
Schutte wrote the song
at age 31 when he was
studying theology at the
Jesuit School of Theology
at Berkeley.
Schutte's hymn is also sung
in many Protestant worship
services and is found in
multiple hymnals around
the world.
In 2004 "Here I Am,
Lord" was voted by readers
Georgia Association of
Women Lawyers.
Beyond the bench, Faye
was an excellent cook,
and often prepared her
famous roasted goat for
the Bulloch County Bar
Association. She loved to
fish in the Ogeechee River,
the intracoastal waterways
and St. Catherines Island
Sound. She and her
family enjoyed weekends
at Yellow Bluff Fishing
Camp and Colonels Island
in Liberty County, Ga.
Her pride and joy were
her brothers and sisters,
husband, children and
grandchildren, nieces,
nephews and extended
family. Once asked
if rearing children or
practicing law was harder,
she replied, “both,” which
she did equally well. She
had a love of nature, all of
God’s creatures and was
generous of spirit.
Funeral services were
held on Monday May
29, 2023, at 11:00 am at
the Statesboro Primitive
Baptist Church with Elder
Randy Waters officiating.
A graveside service and
burial were held at 2:00
pm in Eastside Cemetery in
Statesboro.

(Os
Mi/md FO The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the
still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all
the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
as the second most favorite
in the Episcopal Church. A
survey conducted by the
National Association of
Pastoral Musicians found
among members that it
was among the"songs
that make a difference".
Daniel L. Schutte was
bom in Neenah, Wisconsin
in the year 1947. He is a
composer of American
origin and of liturgical
music. Daniel was brought
up in a small village named
Elm Grove in Wisconsin.
He received his bachelor’s
degree in 1973 from St.
Louis University. He
also obtained a master
of divinity degree at the
Jesuit School of Theology
and a master’s degree at
the Graduate Theological
Union. Both at Berkeley in
1979 and 1980.
Daniel gained his
music experience through
his grandparents that were
accomplished musicians
themselves. He would
love listening to them play
the piano and would sit
for a longer periods at the
piano himself to make up
melodies.
When Daniel was a
young theological student
in Berkeley, one of his
friends walk up to him and
asked for a favor. He had
asked him to compose a
piece of music that would
go along with the text
of Isaiah chapter 6 for
his diaconate ordination
By Sam Eades, Publisher/Writer
for
The Times
ceremony.
Schutte was shocked
and his friend could see it.
He was shocked because
of his awareness that the
ceremony was only three
days away. He went on to
tell his friend that he was
sick with flu and would
not promise to compose
suitable music within that
short time.
However, Daniel's
friend encouraged him. He
finally gave in and stated,
" I will try my best to put
something together for the
ordination."
Daniel has always
adored that particular
Scripture passage (Isaiah
6). This is a passage where
God calls Isaiah to be his
servant and messenger to
the people. In which Isaiah
not only responded with
both doubt and hesitation
but also with a humble
willingness to surrender to
God’s wishes. Daniel knew
that if the composition is
going to work, it would
be by the power and grace
of God that will make it
happen.
But to Schutte's surprise,
people loved it from the
onset. The hymn obviously
established the dialogue
between God and mankind,
which the bottom line of
the hymn.
Daniel concluded that the
story behind the hymn
“Here I am. Lord” revealed
of the Lord who is above
all, giving strength to our
faltering words and the
easy labours of our hands,
and forging them into a
substance that can be a
grace for people.
And in conclustion he said:
“The power that God gives is
far beyond what we could
have planned or created.”
Please reflect on the lyrics
I, the Lord of sea and sky
I have heard my people cry
All who dwell in dark and sin
My hand will save
I who made the stars of night
I will make their darkness bright
Who will bear my light to them
Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go Lord, if You lead me
I will hold your people in my heart
I, the Lord of snow and rain
I have bom my peoples pain
I have wept for love of them, they turn away
I will break their hearts of stone
Give them hearts for love alone
I will speak my word to them
Whom shall I send? (Choms)
I, the Lord of wind and rain
I will tend the poor and lame
I will set a feast for them
My hand will save
Finest bread I will provide
Till their hearts be satisfied
I will give my life to them
Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go Lord, if you lead me
I will hold your people in my heart
I will hold your people in my heart
