’ Looking over the schedule, fans will notice one difference over last season and that is
the number of home games the War Eagles will have this year. Last season, the War Eagles
only had four home games. This year that has flipped and they will only have four on the
road; five if you count the scrimmages.
War Eagle fans will get their first look in a home scrimmage on August 11 th ; however,
it will be Treutlen that will be the first regular-season game. Looking through the schedule,
the War Eagles will travel to Johnson County in what will be one of the toughest opponents
the team will face this season. Last season, Johnson County was eliminated in the state
semifinals and gave the War Eagles won of the worst losses of the season last year which
was only by two touchdowns.
The War Eagles will host ECI this season, after a win in Twin City last year, the War
Eagles will try to make it two years in a row over the Bulldogs. The season for the War
Eagles will end at Portal. Just like last year, there are five teams in the region and four out
of those five will make it to the GHSA State Playoffs. One media source, two weeks ago,
released their predictions and have the War Eagles winning the region.
In the coming weeks, we will highlight more of these matchups and some interviews with
coaches as we prepare ourselves for the 2023 football season.

As the successful
football season came to
an end in the month of
November, the highly
anticipated basketball
season began for the
Jenkins County War Eagles.
The previous season ended
in a heartbreaking two-
point loss in the second
round of the state playoffs.
Before the playoffs began,
the War Eagles made a run
to the region tournament
championship losing
only by four points. The
2022/2023 season was
expected to be full of
similar success.
The season started off
with two wins over teams
from South Carolina, then
after a loss to Treutlen,
the War Eagles would go
on a ten-game winning
streak dominating every
opponent during that time.
The War Eagles would then
lose only three regional
games during the season,
two to Portal and one in
overtime to McIntosh
County Academy. This set
up the War Eagles as the
number two seed heading
to the regional tournament.
The regional tournament
games may have been
some of the most exciting
games of the entire
season. The first game
for the War Eagles was
against McIntosh County
Academy. The War Eagles
jumped out to an early lead
just before
MCA came
charging back. Down by
one point, with seconds
remaining. Coach Sweet
called a timeout. The play
that was drawn up worked
to perfection. Junior ZZ
Wilson, on his first game
back from an injury, caught
the ball and pulled up for
a three-point shot. As the
hom sounded, the ball
went through the net and
the War Eagles celebrated
a two-point win.
The regional
championship would
be played on the very
next night and would be
played before a sold-out
crowd. The War Eagles
would fall that night, but
their second-place finish
in the tournament set up
the War Eagles to host the
first round of the playoffs.
The first round of playoffs
was against Telfair County
and did not end as the War
Eagles had expected. The
War Eagles lost 64-57.
At the end of a great
season, three War Eagle
players were named to
all-region teams. Senior
Marcus Golphin and
Sophomore James Allen
were named to the first
team all-region; Senior
Demontre Moore was
named to the second team
all-region. The War Eagles
did lose some seniors,
but a lot of the team will
return for the 2023/2024
season which will have an
anticipated start sometime
in late November.
