Safety tips for safe
swimming this
summer
Bv Tyler Busch,
Podcast Director & Reporter
far
The Times
It is that time of year
where the beaches, pools,
lakes, and every other
body of water is packed
with swimmers trying to
get some relief from the
gmeling summer heat. Not
everyone knows how to
swim or all of the hidden
dangers water can bring. I
know at Lake Lanier, north
of Atlanta, I would read
articles or see on the news
about another person who
drowned at Lake Lanier.
I was taught to swim at a
young age, but I am not a
good swimmer. One good
source for safety tips while
being in the water can be
found on the American
Red Cross’ website.
Some of the tips found
on this website are, “ 1)
Provide close and constant
attention to children you
are supervising in or
near water, 2) Take smart
precautions and use layers
of protection, and 3)
Ensure that everyone in the
family leams to swim well
and what to do in a water
emergency” (American
Red Cross 2023).
Other tips the American
Red Cross recommends
is to not swim alone and
that all parents should be
paying close attention to
their children while they
are in the water, even
when a lifeguard is or is
not present. They also
recommend that small or
inexperienced swimmers
should wear a life jacket
while swimming to prevent
an incident like drowning
from occurring. You can
find all this information
on their website at www.
redcross.org. In any
incident, to call 9-1-1
immediately, because
seconds do count in saving
a life. The website goes
into more detail about
where you can take swim
lessons and other useful
resources for parents and
kids to stay safe swimming
this summer.
The CDC (Centers
for Disease Control) has
several tips to stay safe
and healthy while in
the water this summer
on their website, www.
cdc.gov. Their website
includes information
about how someone can
get sick swimming in any
body of water like a pool
or ocean and how fast
germs spread through the
water. The most common
illness people contract by
swimming in contaminated
water is diarrhea.
In oceans, the biggest
danger to all swimmers
is the presence of strong
rip currents. There are
flags posted at the various
entries to the beach that
let you know the risk of
strong rip currents with a
green flag meaning low
risk, yellow flag meaning
moderate risk, red flag
meaning that strong rip
currents are expected. A
double red flag means that
knowone is allowed in the
ocean.
Locally, the Screven
County Recreation
Department is hosting
swim lessons at the Rec
Center from June 5-15th
(Monday-Thursday only)
and you can sign up online
via the rec center’s website
which is, www.screvenrec.
com. Swim lessons are
held at the Screven County
Rec Dept, pool in Sylvania
and a swim lesson costs
$30 per child. In Jenkins
County, swim lessons are
not offered.
Stay safe this summer
and enjoy the water and
sunshine!

Gun shop owner closing store after spike in violence
involving children
A Georgia gun shop owner is closing after the spike in
mass shootings and gun violence involving children. Jon
Waldman opened Georgia Ballistics in March 2021. Locally,
four teenagers have been shot in separate instances across
Metro Atlanta since Saturday. Waldman believes that by
closing his shop, he is doing his part although he knows he
has not sold a gun that committed the violence, “it could
happen.” He said.
Statesboro drafting new event center permit
Since a teen shooting in April at a private party the city
has been working on a plan to make sure people stay safe a
large-scale event. The new ordinance proposes strict rules
for even planners. It would require venues without liquor
licenses to be inspected prior to the event.
Someone from the event planning company must be on
site. The ordinance puts the responsibility for the behavior
of participants on the event center.
Clayton County jailer accused of using inmate’s credit card
Clayton County Sheriff Levon Allen says Iyana Dixon,
a contractor at the jail, was arrested Wednesday night
and charged with financial transaction fraud and theft by
taking. Dixon is accused of using an inmate’s credit card
without permission on five separate occasions, including
Macy’s.
Gwinnett County teacher accused of molesting student
A now former Gwinnett County teacher accused of
molesting a student faced a judge Wednesday. R’Kheim
Young has been a teacher for more than 10 years. The victim
sent her mother a text on Feb. 27, 2023 asking to be picked

Anti-semitic flyers showing up in Roswell neighborhood
Hundreds of anti-Semitic flyers have been showing
up in Roswell community and police are investigating.
Roswell Police say the investigation is ongoing. They
began investigating after homeowners in the Eden Wild
subdivision found them Sunday morning. Back in February,
Sandy Springs and Dunwoody saw the same thing. That
came after lawmakers considered a bill that would make
antisemitism crimes part the state’s hate crime’s bill.
Georgia’s supreme court upholds dismissal of challenge
to amendment allowing guns on campus
On Wednesday, Georgia’s highest court upheld a lower
court ruling dismissing a lawsuit brough by five college
professors challenging the removal of public colleges and
universities from a list of “school safety zones” where
weapons are prohibited.
Before the 2017 amendments to state law, it was a
misdemeanor crime to carry or possess a weapon on property
or in buildings owned or leased by a college or university.
The five University System of Georgia professors who sued
over the amendment said allowing the carrying of weapons
on campus went against longstanding university system
policies.
