Let me tell you, there is a good bit of history out these country roads for sure. One spot that is fascinating to me is the old Turner's Store. Turner's located in four points once had gasoline pumps out front and sold milk, bread, fresh eggs, candies for the kids and some household goods. This wonderful country store would have been an essential place to stop for farmers and others in this section of southern Jenkins County. R.L. “Boss” Turner, owned this little country store for over 40 years. From the 1920's until the 1960's. Dottie T. Leatherwood is his Granddaughter and she still has ledger books from the 1920's and 1930's. It is said that the original building burned and they had to rebuild. Mr. and Mrs. Turner also lived across from the Elam Baptist Church, which is not far from the location of the old store. No one is sure who ran the old country store in the seventies, however, we do know that Mrs. Betty Bennett ran the store from the eighties to the nineties. If you have any other history on this historic country store or special places in Jenkins County that you would love to see featured, please send to: samsylvaniatimes@gmail. com. At the June City Council meeting last Tuesday, council members voted to award Coastal Tree Care, LLC the bid for removing 18 dead oak trees and pruning an additional 10 more from the grounds of the Millen Cemetery. Coastal Tree came in at $17,600 to perform the work including grinding the 18 stumps. The dogwood trees also need removing since the blight that affected dogwoods across the state several years ago. “The city work crews will remove those {dogwoods},” City Manager Jeff Brantley told council members. Coastal Tree Care is owned and operated by Perry Royal. Welcome to the world Baby Clark Lane Douglas Clark and Lauren McNure Clark are proud to announce the birth of baby boy James William Clark.
