United States Post
Office of Jenkins
County

Deep in downtown Millen, Georgia is an old building
still standing throughout time. The United States Post
Office of Millen. While several towns in the United States
have closed their Post Offices, Millens still stands.
The Millen Post Office was established in 1840 in what
was then known as Brinsonville; Georgia. The very first
postmaster was Martin Marsh. The post office has been
located in several historic buildings over the years. Such
as, the Southern Hotel, the Godbee Building, and the Hotel
Estelle.
The Jenkins County post office located at the comer
of East Winthrope and North Daniel Street moved into its
permanent and present location in 1938. Jenkins County
was created on August 17, 1905, from portions of Bulloch,
Burke, Emanuel and Screven counties, and named after the
44th Governor of Georgia, Charles Jones Jenkins.
The colonial revival exterior trim is made of white
Georgia marble. It has a front entrance with engaged
pilasters and fanlight, marble trim, comice, steps, and
platform along with a flat composition roof enclosed
by parapet wall (wall that continues vertically past the
roofline). Money that was the approved for the cost of the
current building was $65,000. , which was allowed for the
site, building, and administration all together.

Burke County sheriff
strips Waynesboro police
of deputy status
By Joe Brady, Editor
for
The Times
Burke County Sheriff
Alphonso Williams
rescinded the deputy status
of police officers in the
Waynesboro PD last week,
except for the police chief.
In a letter to the chief,
Williams states, “I deputize
municipal officers within
the county to build tmst
and respect, unfortunately some members of your team
have broken that tmst and respect on multiple occasions.
I will not allow any of them, except you Chief Burley, to
operate outside the jurisdiction of the City.”
Williams is currently under investigation by the GBI after
a financial audit revealed discrepancies. The beleaguered
sheriff was found to have spent $200k in grant money on
a credit card that county commissioners never authorized.
Williams was elected to the top job in Burke County in
2017. He has been in law enforcement for thirty years.
It is still unclear as to what prompted this move by the
sheriff.
UPS could strike as
early as August 1
By Joe Brady, Editor
for
The Times
Last Friday 97 percent of unionized UPS workers voted to
authorize a strike by August 1 if the delivery company and
Teamsters can’t come to an agreement before the contract
expires next month.
Teamsters’ president Sean O’Brien said in a statement, “if
this multibillion-dollar corporation fails to deliver on the
contract, UPS will be striking itself. The strongest leverage
our members have is their labor and they are prepared to
withhold it to ensure UPS acts accordingly.”
This is not the first time the delivery service has gone
on strike. According to the Associated Press (AP), workers
went on strike in 1997. But a strike in 2023 could be far
more dismptive as we have become a mail order society.
More Americans rely heavily on companies such as Amazon
to supply their households and businesses.
The strike could have mountainous implications for
the economy. Six percent of the country’s gross domestic
product is moved through UPS each year.
The Union has asked for improved work conditions to
include air conditioning in new UPS trucks and fans for
existing ones. The union is also asking for a pay raise
following the pressure put on drivers during the pandemic
and no excessive overtime. The union has also asked for
more full time jobs and video camera and harassment
protection.

This is a favorite dessert of mine and it is
usually a standard in most
restaurants, especially in the south. It
comes in all kinds of variations,
most are similar but I find this one to taste
the best.
2 cups sugar
1 cup self rising flour
1 large can evaporated milk
1 Vi cup whole milk
1 Tbs Vanilla
3 eggs
1 box Vanilla wafers
6 large bananas
Whip eggs and set aside. Slice bananas
and set aside.
Put sugar and flour in heavy sauce pan
and mix well. Add milk and vanilla, mix
well until there is no lumps. Cook over
low heat, do not bum, stirring continually
until it begins to thicken. Add the whipped
eggs to mix. Stir until smooth. In a baking
bowl or pan, layer a layer of vanilla wafers
and bananas, Pour a layers of sauce. Then
repeat again and again until all ingredients
are used. Let it set for 5 minutes and then
enjoy it warm or let it chill in the fridge and
enjoy it cold.
