Bleachers
Currently, Major League Baseball is the only professional
sport that is playing. The NBA and the NHL just finished
their seasons and were crowned champions of their leagues.
The Denver Nuggets won their first NBA title. The NHL
had a first-time champion as well, the Las Vegas Golden
Knights won the championship.
The NFL will begin preseason play on August 3 rd .
Players are reporting for camps and practices. You might
see some Philadelphia Eagles shirts and jerseys around
the state of Georgia soon. Six players from recent Georgia
Bulldogs championship teams will be on the roster this
season. College football will start at the end of August.
Fans will start getting excited as they make plans to go
to Athens and see the Bulldogs strive for a three-peat as
National Champions. They have won 17 straight games
entering this season. Will they have another undefeated
season?
The Atlanta Braves continue their domination in baseball
this season. They swept the Rockies in a four-game
series over the weekend. In those four games, they had
an incredible 40 runs scored. Presently, the Braves have
the best record in the National League and the second-best
record in MLB. At the beginning of the season, I predicted
that the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Baltimore Orioles
would be the surprise teams in baseball this season. The
Pirates were in first place for several games as the season
started, but since they have lost 6 straight and seem to be
falling fast. The Orioles; however, continue to roll through
the season with a 44-27 record for the second-best record
in the American League. The Cincinnati Reds are now the
surprise team in the National League. Suddenly getting
hot and winning 8 straight and only .5 games from taking
the lead in the NL Central.
While a few games have passed since Spencer Strider
set an MLB record, it is worth noting that the pitching
ace recorded 100 strikeouts for the season on May 28 th
versus rival Philadelphia Phillies. It only took 16 innings
to accomplish this feat.
Speaking of Braves pitchers and other greats John Smoltz,
Jeff Francoeur, Tom Glavine, and Chipper Jones all joined
together on June 8 th to broadcast of the Atlanta Braves vs
New York Mets. The broadcast was filled with stories and
excitement as the Braves pulled off an amazing comeback
and won the game 13-10. Tom Glavine and John Smoltz
were two of the greatest all-time pitchers for the Braves
and combined for a total of 436 wins. Smoltz had 16 more
winsthan Glavine in their careers as Braves.
One quick observation from the sports world as we view
sports from “Under the Bleachers.” That observation is
bandwagon fans. When a team starts winning or does
some amazing things they jump on board and quickly buy
all the merchandise and watch every game. As soon as
things go bad, they jump off the wagon. Unfortunately, we
do the same in our Christianity. Yet, it is often the opposite.
When things are bad, we jump on board with Jesus; when
things are good we stray away. Jesus does not call us to
be “fans.” He calls us to be disciples and he puts us in the
game immediately upon our profession of Him. Do not be
a fan of Jesus, be a disciple. Follow Him, love Him, and
walk with Him every day!

Softball
Practice has begun for the
Jenkins County Lady War
Eagles softball team. The
team, led by Head Coach
Renee Hearn will be looking
to build upon the success of
previous seasons as she adds
several new freshmen who
will be looking to help bring
about wins.
As they prepare for the first
game of the new season in
a few short weeks, the Lady
War Eagles can get in some
early preseason exhibition
games. This past week
they won their first two
games played by defeating
Thompson 12-3 and Harlem
8-0.

A Year of Success:
Track and Field
As we continue to look
back at the success of the War
Eagles’ first year in Class A
Division 2.
This week we focus on
Track and Field. The War
Eagles not only had big
winners in Track and Field
at season meets, regional
tournament, and sectional
tournament; the War Eagles
came out at the end of the
season with great success on
the state level.
At the state meet, both
the boys' and girls' teams
performed exceptionally well.
Jenkins County's sophomore,
JT Moye, finished as the
runner-up in the 300M run
and placed 3rd in the 110M
hurdles. He also contributed
to the 3rd place-finish relay
team, along with Javarius
Gilmore, Gemarion Newton,
and Marion Young.
The 4x200 Relay team,
consisting of Rob Coney,
Christian Wilson, Marion
Young, and Calvin Adams,
secured the Runner-Up
position. However, McIntosh
County Academy won the
championship by finishing

nd place in Triple Jump, Jaquavious Gilmore 1 st place Shotput and 2 nd
place Discus, Shayla Stephens. Photo Submitted.
STATE RUNNER-UP! The boys’ 4x200 relay team featuring Rob
Coney, Christian Wilson, Marion Young, and Calvin Adams finished as
the Class A, Division 2 State Runner-up.

best record in Major League Baseball.
Baseball Trivia
(Read Under the Bleachers for the Answers)
John Smoltz and Greg Maddux were two of the greatest
pitchers of all time for the Atlanta Braves. Which player,
Smoltz or Maddux, had more wins.
On Sunday night. May 28 th in front of one of the largest
crowds ever in Truist Park, Spencer Strider recorded his
100 th strikeout of the season. He recorded his 100 th
strikeout and did so faster than any other player in MLB
history in a season. How many innings did it take for him
to accomplish this?
The 4X400 team of Nevaeh Campbell, Katari Badie, Alaya Scott and
Ladaeshia Williams finished in 8 th place. Photo Submitted.

less than a second faster.
Christian Wilson also
achieved 7th place in the
Triple Jump.
The girls' team also attained
great results at the state meet.
Junior Nevaeh Campbell won
three medals by finishing 4th
in the 200M dash, 6th in the
100M dash, and collaborating
with Katari Badie, Alaya
Scott, and Ladaeshia Williams
for an 8th place finish in the
4x400 race. Moreover, Katari
Badie secured her second
medal of the day by finishing
7th in the state 400M dash.
The team’s success has
shown and will continue to
show in the next few years
as the War Eagles were very
young this season. The War
Eagles keep feeding their high
school team through great
success on the middle school
level. The middle school team
had a great showing in their
regional meet. Jaquavion
Gilmore had the best showing
for the War Eagles finishing
in 1st place in Shotput and
2nd place in Discus. Pierre
Williams also had a 2nd place
finish.
He finished 2nd in the
Triple Jump event.
Congratulations on a great
season by the War Eagles’
Track and Field teams.
