Students excel
in state tests
By Joe Brady, Editor

“Jenkins County students test well,” that statement
comes from our outgoing superintendent and agreed upon
by our incoming superintendent. The state Department
of Education also knows this to be true. Jenkins County
tests twenty subjects that are state mandated. “The
highest scores were in 3rd and 4th grade math,” explains
incoming superintendent Dr. John Paul Hearn.
The Georgia Milestone Assessment System (GMAS)
is a comprehensive assessment program testing across
grades 3 - 12. The Milestone Assessment measures how
well students have learned the knowledge and skills as
outlined in the content of language arts, mathematics,
science, and social studies. “Grades 3 - 8 are given an
end of grade (EOG) assessment in core content areas,”
explains Dr. Hearn. “High school students take an end
of course (EOC) assessment for language arts, math,
science, and social studies.”
“At the middle school level, 6th and 7th grade
language arts scores are higher than they have ever
been, and 7th grade math is the best it has been in 5
years.” Superintendent Tara Cooper also explains. “We
have seen improvements across the board. In addition to
3rd-7th grades, middle school 8th grade math and social
studies students increased this year and the high school
students increased significantly in American lit, biology,
and US history.”
Based on the data, it is safe to say that the Jenkins
County School System is the best kept secret in the
state. Dr. Hearn will assume leadership on July 1. “Mrs.
Cooper has left a lasting legacy,” Dr. Hearn said.
Trash still a growing
problem in county
By Joe Brady, Editor
for
The Times
Three years after I penned an article
about the growing trash problem across
the county and unfortunately, the
problem is still unresolved. With thirty
dumpster sites across Jenkins County,
why residents must illegally dump
trash and debris baffles county leaders.
“Only household garbage should be
thrown into the dumpsters,” Grady
Saxon, County Administrator explains,
“nothing should be thrown on the ground
around the dumpsters. All other garbage,
including construction debris, should be
taken to the county landfill for disposal.”
The landfill is open Monday - Friday
from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the first
Saturday of the month until noon.
Illegal dumping carries a fine of
$1,000 per incident and county workers
are frequently pulled away from their
regular jobs to help keep the county
dump sites clean. “Cameras are currently
in use at several dumpster sites across
the county and more will be installed
in the coming weeks,” Saxon continues.
Concerned citizens are urged to contact
the sheriff’s office if illegal dumping is
witnessed.
