Hotel Estelle, also known as Hotel Millen was erected
in 1890. The Hotel Estelle was located at the comer of
Winthrope Avenue and Gray Street where the Orielly's auto
store, currently sits. Several gift shops and stores were
on the bottom level of this historic hotel, not to mention
a restaurant inside. The shops at the time would have
included. Western Union, B. F Goodrich, a shoe store, and
many others. I understand there was also a cleaners.
During the early years, when the hotel was in its heyday,
it was considered to be the most elaborate lodging house
between Macon and Savannah. Porters would meet
customers of the hotel at the train station and push their
luggage in pushcarts up the street to the hotel and carry
them up the stairs to their rooms. There were fifty rooms
along with a side patio and a roof garden. A small drag
store in the building serviced it with a soda fountain. There
was also a three chair barber shop located to the left of the
main entrance. We know that President Franklin Roosevelt
was one President that lodged at this hotel.
The inside floors of the hotel were made of marble. The
hotel itself was an elegant hotel in the community that
served people from all over the world. Many big celebrities
stayed at the hotel while performing at The Pal Theatre.
Luggage was carried by bell hops up the stairs because
there were no elevators at that time. It was a staple in the
community of Millen for a very long time.
The hotel was demolished in 1974 due to a lack of
business along with being in disarray. The only piece of the
hotel history that is left, is the fountain that was originally
in the lobby of the hotel, that is now located in downtown
Millen near the old train depot. What a tremdous part of
history that we all wish was still a part of our community.
The Hotel Estelle will live on in the hearts of the Jenkins
County citizens forever.
