Missions
In Georgia, we have thousands of churches today.
Most of us have a church within two miles of us where we
can learn about Jesus every Sunday, but it hasn't always
been that way. In 1735, James Oglethorpe invited John
Wesley and his brother Charles to come to Georgia to
teach and preach the Word of God. The Wesleys traveled
long distances to bring the Gospel to as many people as
possible.
As the Wesleys responded to the Macedonian Call in
their day, we all need to be willing to come out of our
comfort zone to send and bring the glorious Gospel to
every little community and every big continent throughout
the world. In his day, the Apostle Paul responded to the
call to missions. "And a vision appeared to Paul in the
night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him,
saying, 'Come over to Macedonia and help us.' Now after
we had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to
Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to
preach the gospel to them," (Acts 16:9-10).
In 1873, Lottie Moon became one of the early single
women sent as a foreign missionary. She dressed like
the Chinese, learned their
language and her cookies see PASTOR page 5

Words of
Encouragement

“Mary’s
Silence”
One day a young couple
took their newborn baby
boy to the temple, to
dedicate this child to the
Lord. As this young family
entered the temple, they
caught the eye of an older
man, who was filled with
joy upon seeing them. He
approached the young
parents and asked if he
might hold their child.
With some hesitation, the
young parents handed
their newborn son to this
stranger. Turning his eyes
skyward, he said “Lord,
now you are letting your
servant depart in peace,
according to your word;
for my eyes have seen your
salvation that you have
prepared in the presence
of all peoples, a light for
revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to your
people Israel.”
Although they knew
the strange circumstances
around their son’s birth,
they were amazed at what
this stranger had said about
their child. Before handing
their son back to them, the
man blessed their family.
Finally, before leaving
them he had one final
message for the child’s
mother, “Behold, this
child is appointed for the
fall and rising of many in
Israel, and for a sign that is
opposed (and a sword will
pierce through your own
soul also), so that thoughts
from many hearts may
be revealed.” - a sword
would pierce her own soul
because of this child!
This is the account in
Luke 2 of Jesus’s first trip
to the temple in Jerusalem
with His parents, Joseph,
and Mary. Simeon, the
stranger, had received
special revelation from
the Holy Spirit about this
child, Jesus - how He was
the Savior that God had
promised. Simeon also
had a special message
from God about His death,
to deliver to Mary - that
Jesus’s life would cause her
great soul pain. His death
was prophesied from the
very beginning of His life.
May we be reminded of this
- that Jesus did not come to
be a good teacher, a good
example, a world-changer,
or a miracle worker - Jesus
came to die for our sins.
Fast forward 33 years to
Calvary. Mary is standing
on a hill outside Jerusalem,
watching a brutal execution
take place. Three men are
hanging on Roman crosses,
and the one on the middle
cross is her son. Her baby
boy, carried for 9 months
in her womb, delivered in
a Bethlehem stable, nursed
at her chest. Her son, who
she saw take his first steps,
speak his first words, and
climb into her loving arms.
Her son, who grew in
wisdom and stature with
men, from a boy to a man,
and minister to His own
people, turning their world
upside down. Her son now
hung on that cross, dying.
What mother would not
give her own life for her
child? What mother would
not move heaven and earth
to stay the execution of her
son? What mother would
not exhaust all possible
resources, last of all her
own voice, to make the
world know that her son
was innocent and did not
deserve to die? And yet,
we find Mary in scripture,
standing silently at the foot
of the cross. We have the
recorded words of Jesus,
we have the words of the
mockers, and we even
have the details of what
the soldiers were doing
as Jesus hung there dying,
Nowhere, nowhere in any
of the four Gospels does
Mary say a word as Jesus
dies.
If anyone could have
stopped Jesus’s death at
the final hour, it would
have been His mother,
Mary. If anyone could have
produced evidence that He
was not the son of God, that
it was all a sham, it would
have been His mother,
Mary. But we see Mary
standing silently at the foot
of the cross because Jesus
is the Son of God, and
Jesus is dying for our sins.
And as Mary stood by and
watched, a sword pierced
her own soul - because
she knew that this was the
reason why God had given
her this child.
