Augusta city councilman sentenced to prison
Sammie Sias, 68, the former District 4 Augusta
Commissioner, was sentenced to 36 months in prison after
being found guilty at trial of destroying records in a federal
investigation and then lying about it to federal investigators
researching the case.
Sias was convicted of destmction, alteration, or falsification
of records in Federal Investigations and false statement,
or representation made to a Dept, or Agency of the U.S.
Sias is also ordered to pay $5,000 and serve three years of
supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
Augusta man sentenced to prison for covid 19 scheme
Kamario Thomas, 42, of Augusta, was sentenced to 38
months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to
commit wire fraud and money laundering. He also must
pay $4,546,945 in restitution to the U.S. Small Business
Administration, and to serve three years of supervised
release.
Thomas conducted a scheme to submit fraudulent
applications for Covid-19 small business relief funding that
netted more than $4.5 million in payments.
Statesboro city council annexes Bel-Air
The City of Statesboro has annexed the remainder of the
Bel-Air subdivision on Northside Drive and approved a
zoning change. This allows $40 million, 124 single family
homes to be developed. Jerry Lee Mikell was also honored
at the monthly meeting for 30 years of service with the
wastewater treatment plant.
Man arrested after fight escalates to deadly shooting at
travel center
According to the GBI, an Augusta man has been arrested
after deadly shooting at a travel center. On June 17, the
Madison Georgia Police Department called in the GBI to
investigate a shooting at the Pilot Travel Center in Madison.
Between 7 and 7:30 p.m., 28 year old Charles Corbit and
32 year old Taylor Dickens were in a fight with each other
when during the fight, corbit grabbed his gun and shot
Dickens.

Jasper County Council places moratorium on large
residential developments
The Jasper County Council took a big step toward slowing
down progress, specifically the amount of building and
development in rural areas. The council approved a 270 day
moratorium on large residential developments, commercial
projects and signs on the north end of Jasper County.
Jasper County Chairman urged leaders to take a step back
and find what properties might be right for development.
A concerned citizen said, “we don’t want another Bluffton,
another Hilton Head, another Hardeeville.”
Hall County man awaiting molestation trial accused of
committing crime again
A Flowery Branch man awaiting trial allegedly sexually
assaulted a second victim. According to the Hall County
Sheriff’s Office, James Kenneth Evans, 34, was arrested
April 2021 for crimes committed against the first victim.
The crimes were committed in 2017 and 2020. That victim
was under the age of 16.
The new victim is under the age of 10 and deputies say the
crimes happened between 2014 and 2015. He’s charged
with aggravated child molestation, aggravated sodomy,
rape, and incest.

Jenkins County Players present, "Steel Magnolia's" on
stage at The Historic Pal Theater. Saturdays show will start
at 7:00 pm and Sunday Matinee will begin at 3:00 pm.
The actors for this production will be. The Jenkins
County Times own. Carmen Bennett, as Ouiser
Boudreaux , Anna Burch as M'Lynn Eatenton , Molly
Edenfield as Truvy Jones, Shana Godbee as Annelle
Dupuy, Elva Mills as Clairee Belcher and Tina Tweedy as
Shelby Eatenton. Sam Eades, Performance Director for the
Jenkins County Players will direct the play.
Tickets go on sale on August 7, 2023. Tickets will
include, general admission, $15.00, reserved seating,
$25.00 and VIP table seating which includes heavy

for VIP table seating) Tickets will be available at The
Chamber of Commerce, Spring Creek Auction, The
Jenkins County Times, from any member of the Main
Street Millen, and in Sylvania at The Sylvania Times
offices.
In the play, Tmvy Jones runs a successful beauty salon
in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies in the
neighborhood have a standing Saturday appointment.
Along with her anxious and eager assistant, Annelle,
Truvy styles the hair of many of the women about town:
wealthy widow and former first lady of Chinquapin,
Clairee Belcher, local curmudgeon Ouiser Boudreaux,
intelligent and compassionate career woman M’Lynn,
and her daughter Shelby, the prettiest girl in town.
Shelby’s engagement is the talk of the town, but the joy
and excitement of her wedding quickly turn to concern
as she faces a risky pregnancy and a myriad of health
complications. Eventually,
when Shelby dies from complications related to her
diabetes, M’Lynn has to deal with the most difficult
of life’s challenges: the loss of one’s only child. As the
women of Chinquapin makes their ways over life’s many
hurdles together, they find comfort in one another.

be responsible for general duties of engaging
directly in firefighting, rescue, and fire prevention
activities. Drives and operates fire equipment,
assists in maintenance and repair of fire stations

Must possess certification as a Firefighter from the
Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council
