Under the
Bleachers
The summer temperatures are heating up, summer practices
are underway for several sports, and the new school year is
right around the comer. The middle school and high school
football teams are getting in their summer workouts. The
boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have been participating in
summer leagues. The softball teams have played a couple
of games and they are on the field daily getting ready for
the new season.
The only professional sport with games currently is Major
League Baseball. The Atlanta Braves are still the best team
in the National League based on their record. They finished
one of the most exciting series of the season facing the
Cincinnati Reds winning two out of three against one of
the hottest teams in baseball. All three games of the series
finished with a one-mn margin.
Earlier in the season the Braves faced the Reds and won
all three games also by a margin of one ran in each of the
games.
The next time you participate in a trivia night, and sports
history is a category, here is a little sports history for your
week. On this date (June 26 th), the Cleveland Indians (now
the Guardians) experimented with numbers on a jersey in a
game against Chicago. This was the first time MLB players
were identified by numbers corresponding to those on a
scorecard!
Speaking of practices and preparations that are going on in
local sports, I have always heard it said, “You will play how
you practice.” This is a good statement not just for sports
but for all of life. 1 Timothy 4:7-9 says, “Have nothing to
do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train
yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value,
but godliness has value for all things, holding promise
for both the present life and the life to come. This is a
trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance.” Learning
to train ourselves for godliness through disciplines such as
prayer and Bible Study equates to how we will run this life.
Preparation is necessary in every avenue we walk.
This week, get out from Under the Bleachers_
and train yourself. Train yourself
spiritually, physically, and mentally!
Live and enjoy this life. Under the / \
Bleachers is a rather easy place to hide, $TC/*Q=^/
but we were not made to dwell Under
the Bleachers, we were made to go!

In the last of our stories on “A Year of Success”
looking back at the previous athletic seasons at
Jenkins County, the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams
found themselves doing well through the whole
season. It was the team’s first year under Head
Coach Sabrina Dorrity, and the team fought hard
for and excellent finish.
For the first time in several years, the Jenkins
County boys’ and girls’ tennis teams played in
the state tournament. In addition to making, it to
the state tournament, both teams hosted the first
round. To make it even better, both teams won
their first-round matches and they are advancing
to the GHSA Class A Division 2 Sweet 16.
The boys’ team finished their season 8-7 overall, and
defeated Hawkinsville 3-1 in round 1. The girls’ team
finished 6-9 and defeated Wilcox County 4-1 in the first
round of the state tournament. The great run for the boys’
and girls’ teams ended in the Sweet 16. The boys traveled
to Charlton County where they were shut out 5-0. The girls’
team faced Lanier County and lost 4-0 in the
round of 16!
Congratulations to the boys’ and girls’ tennis
teams and all the athletes in the 2022/2023
school year at Jenkins County. It was truly a
year of success that will be built upon in the year
ahead!

While the JCHS Cheerleaders are not a
competition team where awards are won, the
cheerleaders also had a year of success. The team
begins their practice time in the summer, leads
a summer camp for a week with kids, cheers for
all football games home and away, and cheer
for all girls’ and boys’ basketball home games.
Some of the girls will also be found playing
other sports while also cheering. Some of the
girls play a game of basketball, change into their
cheer uniforms after the game, and head into the
stands to cheer on the boys’ team.
Success for the cheerleaders at Jenkins
County is measured in perseverance, hard work,
and dedication to the teams they are cheering for.
Congratulations on a job well done for the JCHS
Cheer Team.
