Studying abroad in England
It has been a busy couple
days, (last night we all
finally got some much
needed sleep). Sleeping
on the plane (especially
if you’re not in first class)
is not comfortable. My
flight to London left
Atlanta with no problems
Thursday evening and
arrived sometime after 8
a.m. London time. I had
never flown internationally
before, so having a meal on
a plane (not just snacks) was
a first for me. Unfortunately
where I sat was on the wing,
so I couldn’t see too much
but was more worried about
who I would be sitting next
to.
For my random seat
mate, I had an older South
African woman (of Welsh
descent she told me) and
was flying back to London
after spending a few weeks
visiting family in the
Atlanta area. Her name was
Branwen (sounds like a
last name to me but is not
apparently lol). We talked
about everything from the
current state of the world/
politics, America, South
Africa, etc. Very sweet
lady, having told me she
was traveling for the first
time since 2019 and was
interested in what I would
be doing while in England.
It would have been nice to
have sat next to someone
who was on my study
abroad trip but hearing her
English accent was a treat.
London is very diverse,
as is any large city. The
group (50+ people) split
up into groups and did a
neighborhood walk with
one of the professors. The
group I went with showed
us how to use the Tube and
went to Piccadilly Circus
and Trafalgar Square. The
Tube is well used and not as
complicated to navigate as I
thought it would be. I don’t
know what London is like
in the winter, but during
the summer, the trains are
hot and sticky. The dorm
I am staying at is that way
too, since it's not common
to have A/C in Britian
but there is no shortage
of radiators. We have run
into a couple British folks,
who you can
tell are like,
“these bloody
Americans
are here’’,
especially
when it comes
to walking up
the stairs at the
train stations.
We can thank
driving on
different
sides of the
road for that
confusion.
Earlier
today, we
had to go
on a photo
frenzy for an
assignment
which took my
group of 5 to
several parts
of London.
Every student
was given an unlimited
tube card (called Oyster)
which helps greatly. I saw
Big Ben, Parliament for
the first time and a little
bit of Westminster Abbey
(even none of these places
were on our list of places
to take photos for, but I’ll
go back later). Still much
to do and see and classes
start Monday. Tomorrow,
the entire group goes to
Hampton Court Palace.
Stay tuned next week to
read about my adventures
that will be occurring this
upcoming week and have a
Happy 4th!!
