Good news is like a cold
glass of water on a hot
summer day. We need
to hear happy talk in a
world full of trouble and
sadness. When we need to
overcome sorrow, then the
Savior steps in to tell us the
best story ever told and it's
totally true from beginning
to end. During this time of
year, we celebrate God's
love for us in giving us the
best gift ever! Jesus is the
gift that keeps on giving for
a lifetime and forever.
Before Jesus was bom,
Mary and Joseph lived
ordinary lives. Suddenly,
everything changed when
an angel announced good
news. The angel surprised
Mary. She was afraid but
she believed every word
of God's message about
the upcoming birth of
Christ. "But when she saw
him, she was troubled at
what he was saying, and
considered what manner of
greeting this was. Then the
angel said to her, 'Do not
be afraid, Mary, you have
found favor with God. And
behold, you will conceive
in your womb and bring
forth a Son, and shall call
His name JESUS,' " (Luke
1:29-31).
The angel also shocked
Joseph by bursting forth
into sight. Joseph did
not understand what was
happening, but he tmsted
God to work out his plan.
"But while he thought about
these things, behold, an
angel of the Lord appeared
to him in a dream, saying,
'Joseph, son of David, do
not be afraid to take to you
Mary your wife, for that
which is conceived in her
is of the Holy Spirit. And
she will bring forth a Son,
and you shall call His name
JESUS, for He will save
His people from their sins,'
" (Matthew 1:20-21).
As Mary and Joseph
came out of their comfort
zone to provide a place for
Jesus to grow up and fulfill
his mission, believers are
called to put aside our
convenience, make room
for Jesus and share the
good news about the birth
of Christ. The wonder of
Christmas is wrapped up
in the wonderful message
of salvation. Baby Jesus
grew up to die on the Cross
and rise again for us. That's
good news!

“Methuselah”
2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord
is not slow to fulfill his
promise as some count
slowness, but is patient
toward you, not wishing
that any should perish,
but that all should reach
repentance. ’’
Do you know who the
oldest man in the Bible
was? His name was
Methuselah and he lived
to be 969 years old. If
the average man were to
live 80 years, Methuselah
lived 12 lifetimes. There
is something else special
about this man beyond
his historic longevity, the
meaning of his name.
Methuselah was the son
of Enoch, the man who
walked with God. Enoch
named his son Methuselah,
which means “when he
dies, judgment will come.”
Methuselah went on to
have a son named Lamech,
and Lamech had a son
named Noah. Noah was
Methuselah’s grandson,
and in the 600th year of
Noah’s life, God sent a
flood on the earth and
killed everyone and all
things, except for Noah’s
family and the animals on
God’s ark.
Genesis 6:5 tells us why
God sent the flood on the
earth, ““The Lord saw that
the wickedness of man
was great in the earth, and
that every intention of the
thoughts of his heart was
only evil continually.” The
flood was God’s judgment
on mankind. Mankind had
become so evil in their
continual sin, that God
decided to start over with
Noah’s family.
This sounds like today’s
narrative of the Old
Testament “God of wrath”
right? It goes like this, in
the Old Testament, God
is wrathful - unkind, hard,
and a God of blood, killing
all who don’t obey Him.
In the New Testament
however, God is a God of
love, grace, patience, and
kindness. This narrative
is just not true! God says
in Malachi 3:6, “I am the
Lord and I do not change,
therefore O Israel, you
are not consumed!” God
told Israel that they should
be consumed because
of their sin, but because
He does not change, He
would not consume them.
God’s grace and love, his
patience and longsuffering
is seen all throughout the
Bible, and it is especially
seen in the Old Testament
too.
Methuselah is one of the
greatest pictures of God’s
grace, His patience and
longsuffering in the Old
Testament. Methuselah
means “when he dies,
judgment will come” and
in the year Methuselah
died, the flood came on
the earth. (Here’s the math
- Methuselah had Lamech
at 187, Lamech had Noah
at 182, and the flood came
when Noah was 600. 187 +
182 + 600 = 969!)
When Methuselah died,
God’s judgment was
executed on sinners in the
form of a worldwide flood.
Here is God’s grace in His
judgment - Methuselah
was the longest living
person in the history of
the world. God proves
His patience and long
suffering in Methuselah’s
long life. God detemiined
judgment would come
before Methuselah was
bom, and then He suffered
long in waiting 969 years
for mankind to turn from
their sins.
Methuselah’s long life
is a picture of God’s grace
towards sinners. 2 Peter3:9
tells us why God is patient
and longsuffering,” The
Lord is not slow to fulfill
his promise as some count
slowness, but is patient
toward you, not wishing
that any should perish,
but that all should reach
repentance.” God wants
all men to be saved from
their sins, He doesn’t
want any to perish in their
sin, but to be saved, men
must repent. Repentance is
turning away from my sin
and turning toward God.
Repentance is agreeing
with God that I am a sinner
and I need His salvation.
In Matthew 24:37-
39, Jesus gave a warning
considering the flood of
Noah. He said that when He
comes back in judgment, it
will be just like the days of
Noah were, people were
living their life unaware
of the coming judgment,
until it came suddenly and
swept them away. Consider
Methuselah’s long life and
think about God’s patience
with you. Consider God’s
judgment of sinners and
his free gift of salvation
of all who repent of their
sin. You have experienced
God’s grace in His patience
and longsuffering, but
have you experienced His
grace in the forgiveness of
your sin?
