Keeping Lights On with
Vegetation Management

Planters Electric
Membership Corporation’s
(EMC) Integrated
Vegetation Management
Program helps balance
the need for safe, reliable
service by keeping the
right-of-way clear of trees
and overgrown vegetation
with respect for the natural
environment.
Tree clearing, pruning,
mowing, and herbicide
application are necessary
steps Planters EMC takes
to ensure greater safety for
workers and the public and
to provide more reliable
service for members.
“During 2023, right-of-
way crews are working
in eastern Burke, eastern
Screven and Effingham
counties,” says Chris
Drake with Planters EMC.
“So please slow down and
move over when you see
utility trucks alongside the
highway because they are
working to keep the lights
on.”
The goals of the
Vegetation Management
Program are to provide
reliable electricity to
members, protect the
electric distribution system
and reduce power outages,
minimize negative impacts
on the environment, and
allow workers to work
safely and efficiently.
An herbicide application
is used to control the
growth of unwanted plants
such as woody brush and
vines that may cause power
outages. Crews treat with
grass-friendly herbicides
using a low-volume
backpack application or
spot treatment.
This form of application
is beneficial because it
leaves many plants for
pollinators like bees,
butterflies, birds and other
insects. It provides more
coverage for turkey, quail,
deer and other wildlife as
well as a better food source.
It is much less invasive to
fawns and ground nesting
birds than mowing.
All herbicides used by
Planters EMC are EPA
approved for right-of-way
use and are safe for humans
and animals including fish.
No Roundup/glyphosate
products are used.
Planters EMC
contractors including Akin
& Sons, Helena and
Osmose Utilities Services
help manage the Vegetation
Management Program.
Only Planters EMC
employees and approved
contractors are authorized
to work in the cooperative’s
right-of-way area. For
more information visit the
Planters EMC website at
www.plantersemc.com.
Planters EMC is an
electric cooperative
providing electricity and
related services to more
than 12,900 member-

The Ogeechee River Railroad Depot
There have always been special uses for the word “Ogeechee, besides Ogeechee River.
One of those was the Ogeechee Railroad Depot. The Ogeechee was the site of a railroad
stop on the Central of Georgia Railroad. The Central had built depots every 10 miles out
from Savannah, which meant that The Ogeechee Depot was actually 61.5 miles from
Savannah. These trains also traveled to Sylvania, when the railroad was more active.
Now, the top speed of the Central trains at first, was only suppose to be 16 miles per
hour, which would mean that it would take all day to get from Savannah to the Ogeechee
Depot. This also meant making a stop at each location along the way, to drop off or pick
up passengers.
Some Screven county folks could remember that in 1935, two trains collided head-on
at Ogeechee Depot. Some said the trains were going as fast as 70 miles per hour. The
engineers and firemen on both trains were killed, and many passengers were injured.
The Ogeechee Depot has its own special histories. The most famous incident happened
on November 30, 1864, when Union General Sherman and his 17th Corps passed through
Ogeechee, tearing up the tracks and burning them down, along with the depot and the
bridge that crossed the Ogeechee.
For a long time, the Ogeechee Depot served as the main transfer point for all mail and
deliveries. Some of them would make their way to Screven County.
This my friend, is a great part of our history in Georgia and Screven County.
If you happen to have pictures of your family working on the Ogeechee River or Railroad
Depot, please send them to me along with the history of the picture. I will be happy to
share them with our readers. You can email them to: thejenkinscountytimes@gmail.com
