There is a bit of a draught
in sports this time of the
year. Local high school
teams will resume practice
this week as all teams were
required to observe the
GHSA “dead week” this
past week. Starting this
week fall sports teams will
be practicing or playing all
the way through November.
Major League Baseball has
arrived at its midsummer
classic, the All-Star Game.
Eight players from the
Atlanta Braves will play for
the National League team
on Tuesday night of this
week. While All-Star Week
is fun to watch, especially
the home run derby, there
is not a lot at stake other
than bragging rights.
At the season’s midpoint,
the Braves lead all teams
in the standings. They won
60 games and were the first
team to have 60 wins. This
is one of the hottest starts
in the Braves’ history and
one of the best in baseball
history.
I predicted at the first of
the season where I thought
teams would finish in
the season. I was not too
far off on my predictions.
The Braves are still the
front-mnner to take the
east. I predicted the West
to be won by the Padres
and the Cardinals to win
the Central. Presently the
Cardinals turned out to be
one of the worst teams in
baseball. The Padres still
have a below.500 record. It
does not appear that those
teams will be making the
playoffs. In the American
League, the AL Central
looks to be a close race as I
predicted the Twins to win
the Central and they are in
first place. The AL East is
dominated by the Tampa
Bay Rays, I predicted the
Yankees; the AL West has
been dominated by the
Rangers which is a surprise,
1 predicted the Astros. Two
out of six are not very good
predictions, I hope no one
placed bets on me being
right!
Lastly, in sports news,
the Wimbledon tennis
tournament is taking place.
Wimbledon is by far one
of the most prestigious
tournaments. The familiar
all-white uniforms for
the players and the well-
manicured grass courts
make Wimbledon worth
watching. The tournament
takes place in London,
England.
The sun is shining, the
dog days of summer are
here or at least approaching,
and Friday nights are about
to be made for high school
football. Before long we
will all emerge from Under
the Bleachers, climb into
the stands, and cheer on
our favorite teams. Until
then, push forward. Do
good to someone every
day. Do your best not
to grow weary in doing
good. Paul writes to us in
2 Thessalonians 3:13 and
Galatians 6:9, “Do not
grow weary in doing good.”
We must be reminded two
times in the Scripture that
some days we just get tired
of helping. That is your
warning this week, do not
grow weary in helping!

2023 Softball Schedule
The 2023 JCHS Lady War Eagle softball schedule has been set. This year the Lady War

won the state championship.
This season, the team will look to build some momentum by adding several freshmen to
an already talented team. Renee Hearn will once again be the head coach for the Lady War
Eagles! While the first opportunity for fans to see the team will be on August 10 th at home
for a regular season matchup, this Thursday (July 13 th ) at 5:00 PM the Lady War Eagles
will host Swainsboro in two exhibition games at the Jenkins County Recreation Department.

part of the Elite American
Football League (EAFL)
which includes teams
in Georgia, Florida, and
Alabama. Presently there
are 39 teams scattered
across these three states.
On average teams played
ten games last season.
Presently there are no
teams in the immediate
area, but there are teams
in Savannah, Effingham
County, and Wrens.
The EAFL got its start in
2021 and has a goal to build
an elite league to showcase
the best in amateur
football. According to the
EAFL website, “The Elite
American Football League
is not looking to be here for
just football games, we're
here to build a powerhouse
league that offers more to
its owners and players.”
Herrington is putting
all the necessary pieces
together as the first tryouts
begin in just a few days.
Tryouts will begin for the
Southern City Soldiers on
July 15th and July 22nd
.Herrington encourages
any man over the age of
18 or turning 18 soon to
come and try out at the
Jenkins County Recreation
Department. Once the
players are selected, the
process of putting the
players into the proper
position will be the next and
final stage in preparation
for the first-ever season.
The team has recently
named the coaching staff.
Head Coach Marquease
Powell will lead the
team and so far his staff
will consist of Matthew
Boulineau (offensive
coach), Jaleel Foots
(defensive coach), and
Levy Williams (defensive
coordinator). The inaugural
season will look to kick off
in January of 2024 with
scrimmage games being
added to the schedule
leading up to the first game.
TC Herrington said that he
was introduced to semi-pro
football about three years
ago while in Savannah and
he loved every moment of
it. This led him to start a
team in Millen. Herrington
knows the talent is in
Millen and the surrounding
area for a good team to
be put together. When
Herrington was asked
why Millen for a team, he
stated, “I believe everyone
deserves a shot.” He also
desires to bring awareness
to our players concerning
issues and controversies
that will allow the town
to band together and
potentially bring solutions
to Millen.
Jenkins County Times
Sports will continue to
keep the local community
up to date as the team is
named and schedules are
released. Herrington asks
for the continued support
of the community. He
said, “Share our Facebook
post, help build our name,
patronize upcoming
apparel, and believe in
us.” “So far”, Herrington
stated, the feedback from
the community has been
very positive as the team
makes its final preparations
to bring semi-pro-football
to Millen.
