If anyone on this trip does not lose weight, they must be doing something terribly wrong! Living in London for the past couple of weeks and walking everywhere has really put into perspective for me how lazy we Americans are and how car dependent we are. I am guilty of this! To be honest, I really do enjoy walking around and seeing all of what London has to offer. For a city of 9 million, it does not disappoint. With where I am staying and its proximity to a Tube station, we have the luxury of going somewhere like Buckingham Palace on a whim. That’s pretty cool if I have to say so myself. I made it back to London after a brief trip across the Irish Sea to Dublin, Ireland. I am sorry to say that I did not see a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but I did see a little person dressed up as a leprechaun! The group I went with visited the Book of Kells Museum at Dublin’s Trinity College (and to my surprise the gift shop had a good bit of Notre Game gear), St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and the Guinness Museum. We did go to multiple bars (we didn’t go crazy) and I do have to say that the best burgers and ice cream I’ve ever had was in Dublin. I was impressed by how much we did in such a short span of time, go team! The accents are different than in London, but Dublin was very similar to England. This week for my class field trips we went to the Science Museum, the Victoria, and Albert Museum, saw the play “Six” (a modern musical about King Henry VIII six wives), and to the Churchill War Rooms. The Six was great and it was also the first musical I saw in London. The Churchill War Rooms was very interesting in seeing where key decisions were made in Britain’s role in World War Two and seeing the bunks Churchill and others lived in during the bombings. Today, my friend Katie and I walked all over Central London, seeing the Borough Market, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, and more. This week I finally walked across the iconic Tower of London bridge, and it was worth seeing in person. Also, the Thames River is very dirty but very busy with boats, water taxis, etc. I have gone to some more bars and pubs, and each one I’ve been to differs in style. I also went to Hyde Park, and it was both pretty and huge. I wish we had parks back in Atlanta that are the size of Hyde Park. I can see why many novels, movies, and more have been inspired by Hyde Park. I also don’t want to leave out my visit to Windsor Castle and going inside St. George’s Chapel. I went by Queen Elizabeth II’s tomb, and the chapel is just as pretty in person as I’ve seen on TV. Tomorrow I am going on a group excursion to Stonehenge and Salisbury and am looking forward to seeing these iconic stone formations in person.
