jenkinscountytimes.com The Jenkins County Times Wednesday, July 26, 2023 - Page 7 Final step left before Vogtle loads fuel By Joe Brady, Editor for The Times The completion of the Vogtle 3 & 4 nuclear expansion site near Waynesboro, Georgia, is an important milestone in Georgia Power's commitment to providing clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy to its customers. Georgia Power recently announced the successful completion of all 364 inspections, tests, and analyses, collectively known as ITAACs, on Vogtle Unit 4. These ITAACs ensure that the unit meets strict nuclear safety and quality standards as required by Southern Nuclear's Combined Operating License. The next step is to await the receipt of the 103(g) finding from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), which will document that the license acceptance criteria for Unit 4 have been met. This finding will confirm that the new unit has been constructed and will be operated in accordance with its Combined License and NRC regulations. Once this finding is received, no further NRC findings are necessary, allowing Southern Nuclear to proceed with loading fuel and initiating the startup sequence. The team at the site is diligently preparing for Unit 4's fuel load and startup. All 157 fuel assemblies required for the operation of the reactor have been delivered to the site. Each fuel assembly, measuring 14 feet tall, underwent inspection and was transferred to the new fuel storage racks before being placed into the spent fuel pool, where all the assemblies will be stored until they are loaded into the Unit 4 reactor during fuel load. The new Vogtle units will play a crucial role in Georgia Power's efforts to meet its energy demands and serve its 2.7 million customers. Once operational, each of the new units will have the capacity to produce enough electricity to power approximately 500,000 homes and businesses. Southern Nuclear will be responsible for operating the new units on behalf of the co-owners, which include Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power, MEAG Power, and Dalton Utilities. Crossing the Ogeechee River A Classic Military Maneuver When an army decides to cross a large stream it is vunerable to attack by the enemy. Army commanders will reduce this vunerablility by crossing the stream at different locations. Whenever possible, each crossing is usually within close distance to the others. The left wing of Union Major General, Henry W. Slocum, faced a similar situation in late November of 1864. As it neared the Ogeechee River during the march to the sea. This group consisted of over twenty eight thousand soldiers pus thousands of horses, mules, and a very large herd of cattle. The Left Wing crossed the Ogeechee River at three different locations. On Monday, November 28th, Union Brigadier General William T. Ward's division of the 20th Corps left Davisboro, allowed by the 14th Corps division of Brigadier General William P. Carlin. They were protecting the Left Wing's supply train of more than 1,200 wagons. Their advance guard, led by the 33rd Indiana were across the river and moving toward Louisville. The Indianans crossed on the 30th, removed the bridge and marched on to Louisville, Ga. All Left Wing divisions converged on Louisville. The delay in moving wagons and livestock across the river while individuals and small groups of soldiers crossed on their own and entered Louisville without officers spelled trouble for the town.
