clarifies recent
public hearing
confusion
Good afternoon, Jenkins County. I would like to try to
clarify a few things regarding the ongoing unrest over the
Solid Waste Management Plan and the proposed landfill
expansion.
The Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) is a state
required document. It does not approve or deny a landfill in
Jenkins County. This plan must be developed and adopted
by the Jenkins County Board of Commissioners.
The Jenkins County Board of Commissioners will hold
a Public Hearing at 3pm on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, in
the Courtroom at the Jenkins County Courthouse to present
details of the proposed SWMP and to address Public
Concerns. That hearing will last for one hour.
The Regular Monthly Meeting of the Jenkins County
Board of Commissioners will be held at 4 pm on Tuesday,
August 8, 2023, in the Courtroom at the Jenkins County
Courthouse, immediately following the Public Hearing.
Regarding the signage posted at the entrance to the
Jenkins County Landfill describing a Public Notice/Public
Hearing, the Jenkins County Board of Commissioners did
NOT place or authorize these signs, nor did it schedule
that hearing. Atlantic Waste Services placed these signs
of its own volition, and without the written authorization
of the Jenkins County Board of Commissioners. The only
Public Hearing that has been scheduled by the Jenkins
County Board of Commissioners thus far is the one that
will address concerns and details of the proposed SWMP
on August 8, 2023, at 3 pm. in the Courtroom at the Jenkins
County Courthouse.
Atlantic Waste Services HAS applied to the Jenkins
County Board of Commissioners for the purpose of
developing a Solid Waste Landfill adjacent to the current
County Landfill. That process is ongoing.
There was some incorrect information published in
both of this week's newspapers and notices of corrections
should be issued next week. Both papers should be issuing
corrections on Facebook and on their respective websites.
