Box 1448, Millen, GA 30442 (fyettuia ito fanout Qe*ifain& By Sam Eades, Publisher/ Writer far The Times Millen's first hospital was opened in the summer of 1915 in what was the old J.H. Daniel, Sr. residence on Cotton Ave. It was called Mulkey hospital. The private hospital was established by Dr. Q. A. Mulkey. The hospital was later renamed, Jenkins County Hospital in 2003. Around July 25, 1918, Dr. Mulkey left for Montgomery, Alabama where he entered the U.S. Army Hospital Service as a first Lieutenant. Mulkey hospital remained closed in his absence until his return in 1921. At this time it was remodeled and re-opened. Mulkey Hospital continued to operate in that location until 1946 when Dr. Mulkey moved into a new location on Daniel Street. Dr. Arnold Mulkey, Dr. Q. A. Mulkey's son, became associated with the hospital after he served in the armed forces in 1942. He returned to Mulkey Hospital in 1946. After the death of his father, Dr. Q.A. Mulkey, he continued to operate the hospital until it was sold to Jenkins County Hospital. The Jenkins County Hospital was constructed through a bond issued in the amount of 1, 320,000.00 and began operation in October 1975. The jenkins County hospital was converted from a 40 bed hospital to a critical access hospital in the year 2000, operating as a 25 bed facility. Currently, the hospital is owned by Jenkins County after being sold several times in previous years. We have to always remember, that to the citizens of Jenkins County, the name Mulkey will live on as the family who began Jenkins County Hospital. The name Mulkey, means medicine. For 51 years, Dr. Q.A. Mulkey treated the residents of Millen. And his son, Dr. A.P. Mulkey continued the practice. The Mulkey father-son team cared for up to three generations of Millen neighbors. City (jfol on the • • • GONE FISHING By Tracey Pruitt Special to The Times never had the reciation for isning until I moved o the country with ny husband. Before relocated to the dirt oad, I couldn’t tell /ou the difference between a stump- oiocker versus a shell- racker. Now I can tell vou that the prettiest ish is the rooster red male red breast). I ;an also tell you there s a difference between i pond and a river fish, astes also differs iepending on WHAT iver you fish in. We all make decisions hat take us in different iirections. Years ago, ny decisions led me to ny dream job in North Carolina. I traveled xtensively and would ypically cross three fate lines every week. At the time, I lived and ovedtowork. I would vork excessive hours, excited to develop ind execute plans that solved organizational ssues. Every day, as was walking in to vork, I would near the Toly Spirit tell me to “Look Up”. I ignored hat voice for months. During my time in North Carolina, I truly bund God. I worked at he coast and attest to he fact that according o Psalm 23:1-4 “He eads me beside still vaters... He restores ny soul”. I began to ealize that the most mportant things in he world don’t come Tom how much you ;an accomplish and vhat problems you can solve at work. A truly ulfilled life revolves iround God, family ind friends. Several years ago, ny husband took me o a secluded little spot to go fishing. I vas astounded by the beauty. Large cypress trees jutted out of the murky green water The afternoon s filtered in through the Spanish moss. It was quite and serene. We spent the afternoon with him fishing and me taking pictures of him and the exquisite surroundings. I would suggest to everyone to take the time to look up and appreciate God’s glory Whether you like to fish or not, take the time to get into a little boat and surround yourself with God’s f oodness. Enjoy the eauty He has made. One thing that is different about living in the country is the sense of sharing and community. Neighbors share their harvests from their gardens or extra fish from their coolers. Recently, we acquired a mess of fish My husband, cleaned and battered them before frying them to golden perfection That night, we feasted on delicious fish from the Brier Creek. My husband, often shares the fried fish tails with me as we eat. They are my favorite. The next day, my husband took the remaining fish to work with him. As he showed the bag of fish to his co-workers one observant team member asked “What happened to the tails? Unbeknownst to m; husband, I had snuc back into the kitchen that night and snacked on the remaining fish tails. He had an entire bag of tail-less fish!
