jenkinscountytimes.com The Jenkins County Times Wednesday, August 23, 2023 - Page 3 A WORD TO THE WISE Reverend Walter H.Hall Grace Community Church Perkins, GA "What is Truth?" “Pilate therefore said unto him. Art thou a king then? Jesus answered. Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I bom, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the tmth. Every one that is of the tmth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him. What is tmth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.” Today, we hear the expression, ‘that is his tmth”. It seems to indicate that tmth is subjective. Subjective tmth means tmth is at the discretion of the individual and never rises above the individual’s morality or ethics. Tmth of this kind never liberates or transforms the individual. It never challenges the individual to a higher plane of living and is not the tmth that is represented by Christ. Then, there is relative tmth. Something becomes tmth only as it relates to the individual or to the situation. This puts the responsibility on the individual or the situation to dictate what is tmth. This is the question that Pilate was wrestling with. In his day, philosophers spent their lives seeking and trying to interpret or find tmth. So, when Pilate is face to face with Jesus Christ, he wanted to know the tmth about Jesus. The Jews had their tmth. They called him a blasphemer. The crowds had their tmth that He was a good man, a teacher who went about doing good and performing miracles. His followers had their tmth. They saw Him as a fulfillment of prophecy and that He was the promised Messiah that Israel was hoping would come. Jesus, on the other hand, said of Himself, “I am the way, the tmth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6). In this statement, Jesus says that He is absolute tmth. He did not say He was a tmth like relative tmth or subjective tmth, but He was the definite or absolute tmth. Jesus came into this world to bear witness to the tmth of God. God’s tmth, the absolute tmth, is one of divine, unconditional love, forgiveness of sins, transformed lives from the worldly to the holy, and eternal life through Jesus Christ. It is only as we accept the absolute tmth of the Gospel and of God that we are enabled to discern what is morally and ethically correct. It is God’s tmth that liberates and transforms lives. Let us accept the challenge to come to and accept the absolute tmth of God embodied in Jesus Christ. Billy Graham not only had an international ministry as an evangelist, but he also served as an advisor to consecutive sitting United States presidents - 12 in fact, from Harry Truman to Barack Obama. Because of God’s work in his life, and his obedience to that work, Billy Graham was given the opportunity to bless 12 presidents. A little-known episode in the story of Joseph, covering just a few verses, is when Joseph brings his elderly father Jacob into the throne room to meet Pharaoh. This is what scripture says about the meeting, “Then Joseph brought in Jacob his father and stood him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.” This is a remarkable statement because no one blessed Pharaoh. The Egyptians believed that Pharaoh was the physical embodiment of the sun god Ra - that Pharaoh himself was a god. Who can bless a god? Pharaoh would never and had never been blessed by anyone, but he allowed Jacob to bless him. I believe Pharaoh allowed the blessing because he had been given a front-row seat to see God’s work in his kingdom through Joseph. Pharaoh had seen God save the world through the interpretation of dreams by a “sent-ahead” servant, Joseph. He had also seen Joseph’s walk with God and it had influenced him. Note, the way we walk with God is observed by those around us. Our obedience and faith open doors that were previously shut. So, what does it mean that “Jacob blessed Pharaoh”? The Hebrew word for “blessed” used here means “to kneel down and bless God and men”. Basically, Jacob was able to pray for Pharaoh. He was invited to pray for God to work and move in Pharaoh’s life and kingdom. In a way, Jacob served as a priest before Pharaoh, taking the hand of Pharaoh and the hand of God and bringing them together in prayer. Billy Graham would later have the same opportunity with 12 sitting presidents that Jacob had with Pharaoh, to be invited into their presence to bless them. You and I have opportunities every day to bless others as Jacob and Billy Graham did. Maybe we won’t stand before a King or a president, but there are people around us that need to be prayed for. There are people around us that need to be taken by the hand and brought into God’s presence - prayer does that. A blesser, in prayer, takes the hand of the needy and the hand of God and brings them together. What a blessing to be used in such a way! Who can you bless today? May your eyes be open this week for opportunities to bless others, to pray with and for others. jJj W J uirs This section is a complimentary service for Jenkins County and surrounding area churches listed in the Church Directory.
