Under the
Bleachers
Sports lovers, it is the most wonderful time of the year!
High School football has started, college and professional
football is days away, baseball continues in the last !4 of
the season before playoffs begin, and once baseball ends
basketball season will have started. For those of us who
love watching sports of all kinds, there is always something
to watch on television.
The Jenkins County War Eagles Cross Country Team
will begin there season this next week. Good luck to our
runners!
The Braves continue to roll! It looks like it will be another
NL East Championship. The Braves are not only the best in
the east, they are also the best in MLB at this point. They
will host rival New York Mets for the next three games at
home before a long road trip that involves the second-best
team in the major leagues, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
One bit of advice for those of us who are sports lovers: be
careful not to let sports become too much of an obsession
these next few weeks. Too often sports and just about
anything else can become almost like a god to us. Let us
keep our grounding and focus on the Lord while enjoying
the games He has given to us to watch. For those of you
who do not like sports at all, just endure with us sports-
crazed fans!

Season Starts With a Win
After two very successful
scrimmage games, the time
came for the War Eagles to
take the field for the first
game of the regular season.
The expectations are high
for this year’s War Eagle
team as some preseason
rankings have them ranked
as high as number three
in Class A D-2. If the first
game of the season is any
indication of what the
remainder of the season
holds, it should be a fun
and exciting season.
After the pre-game
festivities, which included
a performance by the kids
from this year’s Kiddie
Camp, the War Eagles
would receive to start the
game off. The kickoff
return started with a bang
as the War Eagles quickly
drove the ball to the 3 6-yard
line and began in scoring
position. The players
immediately showed off
their speed, quickly driving
to the 15 yard line. Then
ZZ Wilson, from 15 yards
out on 3 rd down scored
the first touchdown of the
season. After a two-point
conversion, the War Eagles
took an 8-0 lead.
While the speed of the
War Eagles will be on
display all season long,
the defense will be hard
hitting once again. The War
Eagles forced a fumble
on the Viking’s first play
of the game. The War
Eagles would capitalize
immediately and ZZ
Wilson would score again.
The War Eagles would
not stay silent on offense.
The next drive for the
War Eagles after forcing
Treutlen to punt would
result in a long drive by
the War Eagles’ Christian
Wilson bring the ball to
the 25 yard line. This time,
after getting the ball inside
the 10, Tyrone Martin
would drive the ball across
the goal line and with
4:05 left in the game, the
War Eagles led 20-0. On
the next offensive drive,
the passing game was on
display. The War Eagles
looked to be in trouble after
a series of penalties left it 1
st and 25. The pass play by
Tyrone Martin brought the
quarter to an end.
By the 7:50 mark in
the second quarter, the
defense of Treutlen had
their hands on their knees
and they were exhausted.
Another deep passing play
from Tyrone Martin to
Javarious Gilmore would
set up another touchdown,
this time by Marion Young.
Once the War Eagles
arrived at halftime, it was
34-0 in favor of the War
Eagles.
The offense continued
and the defense remained
strong. In the end, the War
Eagles won 41-13. Both
offense and defense played
strong.
The War Eagles will
travel to Johnson County
this week. Last season,
Johnson County lost in the
state semifinals. In an early
preseason poll Johnson
County was ranked second.
With the early rankings of
both teams, Friday nights
battle at Johnson County
should be one of the best
early season matchups.
The game will be at 7:30.
