When we go out in the
yard at night during the
summer, we don't see
mosquitoes, but they see
us and we feel their sting
even though we can't
see them in the darkness.
Therefore, a lot of people
put on mosquito repellent
if they are going to be
outside for several hours at
fireworks shows or some
other event. As mosquitoes
seem invisible until we
feel their bite since they
fly so fast and are so small,
we are in the middle of an
invisible, spiritual battle in
our hearts and minds as we
choose daily between right
and wrong and between
good and evil.
As the Holy Spirit
inspired Paul to write to
the Church at Ephesus, he
used the armor of a Roman
Soldier as a word picture
to urge all generations to
prepare ourselves daily
to defeat the Devil and to
march forward for God.
"Put on the whole armor of
God, that you may be able
to stand against the wiles
of the devil. For we do
not wrestle against flesh
and blood, but against
principalities, against
powers, against the rulers
of the darkness of this age,
against spiritual hosts of
wickedness in the heavenly
places," (Ephesians 6:11-
12). Soldiers need amior
to prepare for battle
and everybody needs to
prepare for daily living

and fellowship with other
believers.
Though Joshua learned a
lot from Moses and proved
himself as a courageous
young man, he avoided
overconfidence and kept
on reinforcing his basic
beliefs as he stepped out in
faith to lead the Israelites
into the Promised Land.
The Lord challenged
Joshua to continue to be
brave and to continue
to read the word of God
which brought him this far.
He didn't get there through
his own strength or smarts.
Joshua's job was too big for
him unless he kept drawing
upon God's strength day by
day throughout middle age
and into his elder years.
Joshua needed God's
power and wisdom to
live as an outstanding
example for others and
also to overcome the many
challenges and enemies he
faced as a leader. Therefore,
the Lord spoke directly
to Joshua. "Be strong
and of good courage, for
to this people you shall
divide as an inheritance
the land which I swore to
their fathers to give them.
Only be strong and very
courageous, that you may
observe to do according to
all the law which Moses
My servant commanded
you; do not turn from it
to the right hand or to the
left, that you may prosper
wherever you go," (Joshua
1:6-7).

“The Difference
Between Night
and Day”
Ephesians 5:8,15-16 -
‘for at one time you were
darkness, but now you are
light in the Lord. Walk as
children of light. ..15 Look
carefully then how you
walk, not as unwise but as
wise, making the best use
of the time, because the
days are evil.”
Have you ever heard
this expression? “That’s a
night and day difference!”
We sometimes use that
exclamation to pronounce
our surprise at the drastic
difference between
two things. It’s a good
expression because
nighttime and daytime are
drastically different.
Nighttime is darker, it
is a time to rest and sleep,
it is generally quieter, less
people work at night, and
almost no one schedules
anything between the
hours of midnight and
6 am. Day time is a
different story - as soon
as the sun comes up, the
world wakes up. Here are
some of the things we do
during the day: we can see
clearly because we have
the natural light of the
sun, we work, we have a
task, mission, or goal to
accomplish that day, we
count the working hours,
we schedule social and
public events, and we
interact with others.
Paul uses the illustration
of nighttime and daytime
in Ephesians 5:8,15-
16. He is writing to the
Christians belonging to
the church in Ephesus, and
he is warning them that in
Christ, they belong to the
day, and are to live and
walk in the light. Just like
the workday soon comes
to a close, the workday
of the people of Christ’s
Kingdom is soon coming
to a close - so “make the
best use of the time”. As
Christian’s we only have
so much time to live the
life Jesus has saved us for
and called us to. We must
not waste any time.
The Bible’s teaching
in this passage from
Ephesians is that Christians
are to use their time like
we spend a day. We have
the light of God’s word
to see God and the world
clearly. The light of God
illuminates our own hearts
and the world around us.
We have good work to do
- living out our calling as
disciples of Jesus - loving
God, loving others, and
making disciples based on
the Gospel message. God
gives us a new task each
day to carry out under
the leadership of the Holy
Spirit (if we live by the
Spirit, let us keep in step
with the Spirit). We must
“count the working hours”,
keeping track of the time
so as to best use our day
and not waste any of the
hours in it. At the end of
my life when God shows
me the record of my days,
I want every page to bring
Him glory in the records
of how I used my days.
We interact with others
daily and attend social and
public events - may we
carry Christ with us and be
the salt of the earth and the
light of the world, sharing
the fruit of our lives with
those we come in contact
with, enriching their lives.
Each day is a gift of
God - we must be mindful
of our days and how we
use them. Moses wrote,
in Psalm 92, “The days of
our life are soon gone, and
we fly away...So teach
us to number our days
that we may get a heart
of wisdom.” Live in the
light, in the day, while it
is day! Number your days
and walk with wisdom. At
the end of his life Paul said,
“The time of my departure
has come, I have fought
the good fight, I have
finished the race, I have
kept the faith.” Don’t you
want to be able to say the
same thing when the time
of your departure comes?
Do you need to make some
changes in your daily walk
so that you can fight the
good fight, finish the race,
and keep the faith - so that
your life is well-spent for
Jesus?
