Dover, Ga. and the Ogeechee
This week I want to talk
to you about the town of
Dover and the Ogeechee
River. As you can see
in this picture, there are
several boats that operated
using the Ogeechee River
to carry goods to Dover,
Georgia. This quaint little
community is located 11.7
miles south-southwest of
Sylvania.
The story goes that
their was a rural postman
from Screven County in
1925 that would use an
Ogeechee River boat to
paddle back and forth to
the train station at Dover,
Georgia. You see, the town
of Dover had flooded and
that was the only way
anyone could pick up the
mail for delivery. It always
sounded like a good story
to most folks around town.
However, imagine how
you would feel if one day
you were telling the story
and then you received a
surprise envelope in the
mail and found this picture
with you granddad in his
boat at the train platform.
This acutally happened.
The story was true and
factual.
There is a post office
located in Dover, not far
from the Ogeechee and
it has been in operation
since 1886. According to
tradition, the community
of Dover was named after
a place mentioned in a
Baptist publication. The
name Dover is of Welsh
Origin and the meaning is
"water". It is also a name
for a British seaport on
the English Channel. Now,
we know why the town is
named, "Dover".
Hope you found this as
interesting as I did.
See you next week!
