On Friday, September 1st, during a routine patrol, officers spotted and apprehended two wanted individuals, Dion McCollum, and Rene Harris, both 18 years old. “These individuals were sought in connection to a shooting incident that took place on June 1, 2023, at a Hendrix Street residence,” explained Chief Dwayne Herrington of the Millen Police Department. This development follows the June 6, 2023, report by the Times, which detailed the arrests of three other alleged assailants in the same case. Fortunately, the 14-year-old victim of the shooting did not sustain any life-threatening injuries. Chief Herrington commended the efforts of his officers and expressed gratitude for the collaboration with other law enforcement agencies. "Without the assistance of the Jenkins County Sheriffs Office and Georgia State Patrol, the individuals would not have been captured," Chief Herrington stated. This joint effort underscores the dedication and coordination among law enforcement agencies in Jenkins County. Both McCollum and Harris now face a series of serious charges in connection with the Hendrix Street shooting, including aggravated battery, aggravated assault, participation in gang activity, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and discharge of a firearm near a public road. Chief Herrington hinted at the possibility of further arrests related to this case, indicating that the investigation is far from over. The Hendrix Street shooting sent shockwaves through the local community earlier this year, and the arrests made thus far represent significant progress in holding those responsible accountable for their actions. While the victim fortunately avoided life-threatening injuries, the incident served as a reminder of the importance of swift and thorough law enforcement efforts in maintaining public safety. As the legal process unfolds, the Millen Police Department, along with its partner agencies, will continue to work diligently to ensure that justice is served.
